Hi

Welcome to the forums and the sub area.:)

I never noticed that they took out the PET tools.

I guess the problem was, most didn't work with PE4, and to be honest you can get the same tools at other sites in the web for free anyway.

The special effects?? could be the chrome and layer styles that are provided for download.

Have you checked out the videos yet??:)

Thanks, I have viewed the videos.
Where do I find the PET tools on other areas of the website ?

Hi ..

I think you may have been watching the Video about installing the PET Extras Tools ... if so they are PSE3 only.

The download for them is with the Video ...

I would suggest instead that you go for Grant's free PSE5 tools ... they do the same job but are specific to PSE5:

Better still go to this thread and download the zip file - they're more up to date than the PSE5 ones on Grant's site.

Speaking of PET files. In the PES 3.0 versions there were a number of special effect files that had .atn extensions, they were "35mm Frame, Aged Photo, Border Effect, Filmstrip, and Photo Border. My question is: Will these work in 5.0 and if not are these available for 5.0 (some of them may already be there, for example not sure of the Old Photo effect is the same as the Aged Photo).

Hi ...

There were some problems with them ... I have a feeling that when PSE4 came in most of them just didn't work.

They may work in PSE5 but probably a better option is to download similar effects from the site of Panos.

Quite a lot of his things are free ... but some are only available if you register on the site. Do make sure that if you download anything you download the Elements version as there are also Photoshop things there too.

Just Click on PS Elements over on the left hand side ... then scroll down to the free things :)

PS ... He has some great things on his site :)

NEVER MIND I GOT TO WORK. Now I just got to figure out how to use the tools.

I used the instructions for downloading Grants tools. All went well until I opened E5, I don't see them. Was I suppose to delete a Cache folder like when downloading to 4? I just installed 5, so I'm not too familiar with the work area. I closed Elements, then downloaded the tools to: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\5.0\Photo Creations\special effects; I then opened Elements and didn't see the tools. When I go to my directory for E5 the tools are there??? Any help would be appreciated.

Did you see the Artwork and Effects rebuild when you opened the editor? If not then hold down shift when you open and it will rebuild. Grant's tools should then show up as a drop down in Special Effects.

Wendy,
I went to PanosFX and downloaded some of the effects and they are fun. Just for the heck of it, I also loaded in the PET effects and while I haven't tried them all they seem to work. I just put them in a separate folder and changed the psd file name to thumbs.psd and they showed up fine. Thanks for your tips - I am getting a nice collections of special effects.

Charlotte: you can find instructions here:

http://www.cavesofice.org/~grant/Challenge/Tools/RunTools.html

You won't have all of them - and the alignment tools aren't needed as PSE5 has them already but you'll have the important ones :)

Question - I followed the directions to download Grant's Tools. Put them in the layers folder, then opened E5 and Grant's Tools was on the list but when I hit the Grant's Tools, it opened to a blank area?? Can you tell me what I did wrong??? Please!!!:(

If you mean the layer styles folder that's the wrong place. Should be one folder back up in special effects.

Sorry, I guess I just get it. When I open E5, it shows that it is adding to the Effects palette but then I can't find it. I don't quite understand what you mean by "one folder back up in Special Effects. I get as far as Special Effects then which folder do I click on. Sorry, I'm so confused. :(

Just stop at Special Effects and put the folder called Grants Tools there (the actual tools are inside that folder). Then under Special Effects you'll have Grant's Tools as one of the drop downs and you'll see the tools. Mine looks like this:

774

Thank you Wendy. I just upgraded from 4 to 5 and had a lot of extras that I had downloaded to 4 but didn't know how/or if I could copy the tools into 5. I just downloaded Grant's tools for 5, now I guess I will go to Panos, I really liked his puzzle download and a few others. I kept 4 on my computer for a while because I had extras that I really liked and didn't want to loose them.
