Why cann't I have a image on a layer and then click on a frame to put that frame around the image. It puts the frame on it;s on layer and puts a gray square on top of the image. It wants me to put a image inside of the frame. All I want is for the frame to go around the image I have open. Thanks for any help.

just drag your photo layer above the frame layer. do let me know if that works.

Sorry, that did not work. The gray square does not show but no frame:confused:

if all you are seeing is your photo them you will need to resize it so the frame underneath will show.
Highlight your photo image and hit Ctrl T. move the corner boxes in. if you have vers 4 hold shift down as you do this. if you have 5, you don't need to.

just went and tried. If i was on the layer with the photo and picked a frame, it put the frame around the picture. what version are you using?

That showed the frame but it does not fit right. The background layer shows on the outside of the frame. The image does not fit exactly. I know this should not be this hard. I have leaned other software before but this is the headest:confused:

I when back and started all over. I tried what you said and it did not work for me. I am using PSE5.
What I did was Ctrl J the background layer
then applied the frame to that layer
put frame on it's on layer
wants a image to put inside the frame
the image copy had a gray square on top of it.

have to run and pick up my daughter... I will check when I get back.
edit: quickly..
put your image on it's own layer. put your frame on it's own layer. Add frame. resize frame to fit image. move your photo above frame and resize to fit your frame.

How do I post what i have done to show you. It still is not working.

Kimi
I think that's the point. In earlier versions there was no resizing.. the frame just went around your photo.
Mind you you always lost a bit because the frame was inside the canvas area.
You have more control over the placement in PE5 but you have to do a bit more work.
I too find it a bit clunky.:D

I'll jump in until Kimi gets back.
If you did as she suggested you should have three layers. Two of your photo and one of the frame. Just drag the "copy of background" layer into the grey box and let elements do its thing.
Resize using the slider, as you see fit.
I really don't find this to be intuitive, but it gives you way more flexibility to add matt or a second frame or what have you.

This seems very awkward given the software. Do all frames work this way in PSE5?
GaryK
February 10th, 2007, 05:08 PM
I agree, I'm not nuts about this way either and I could be missing something. As I mentioned it does give a lot more flexibility.
I have barely looked at the frames for PE5 as I have Jodi's for her previous versions and they work as a layer style and much as you are expecting.:)

Robert: The frames in PSE5 are very different but once you get the hang of them they work very well. Try this:
Open your image
Ctrl-double click on the frame you want (that avoids putting the frame on a new layer)
Right click on the framed image and select Fit Frame to Photo (that scales the frame to the size of your image)
Alt-drag a corner of the frame (that expands the framed image from the centre until you get it to the size you want)Several ways to achieve the same thing but one of the keys to using the frames are the options you get when you right click.

I'm still not crazy about it.. I tend to work on a duplicate layer and it is still a bit of a messy workaround.
No biggie ... more of an annoyance than anything else, but only if you are trying to do a quick frame.:)
TonyW

Gary: Lots of different ways to do it but if you just want a quick frame and a mat then you can't beat Jodi's missing styles (and I haven't got the new PSE5 version yet - must be hung up in customs down your way while they check it out to see if it has illegal images on it  )

That is what I do use. I have rarely touched the ones in 5.
I'm waiting too, maybe they need passports now to get over the border.:D
It will likely show up next week while I'm away.. oh well ... something to look forward to on my return. Looks like the hotel has wireless internet so I'll be checking in and seeing if you have yours yet.

Gary, it still does not work correctly if you dup the background layer. It works only if you use the background layer. I am like you not crazy about how it works. You say that Jodi's frame work correctly? :)

Jodi's frames are layer styles so they work like the old frames do.
If you are a subscriber, she has graciously put some in the downloads section. Her Missing Styles CD has way more.
She also has a new one just for 5. Browse around a bit, some of the testers (Kev and Pauline) have posted some examples and Jack has posted a screenshot or four of some samples.
I don't have my copy yet, so I can't say for sure how they work, but nonetheless they look great and I am awaiting my copy.:)

Tony and Gary...you should get it next week..took 7 days to get to Pauline in ONT. ( 5 days to Kev over the pond...go figure ) I mailed Monday so maybe Monday you'll get it....Gary, i know it took a while for you last time but that was during the the time that the borders were really really screwy ? I do recall......not that they still aren't ...maybe just not as much. Anyways, I hope you both get it soon. No way I can track it once it gets into Canadian territory. Just keeping my fingers crossed for you that the good guys get it to ya soon !
The disc includes a 'read me' file for installation and tips on using content. Reading tips will probably help :) Gary, yes dear, i want you to read it...don't worry, it's not a book ;)

I just won't be able to send off a cheque untill I get back, but that is just next weekend anyway.
I'll get my daughter to read it to me.:D

Jodi: Looking forward to it and I never get impatient until Gary says he's got it :) . Here in the wilds of Ontario it always takes an extra couple of days.
Robert: Glad you got something to work for you. The problem (as well as the opportunity :) ) with frames is that there are lots of different types - and they all work a bit differently. PSE5 added to the complexity by adding a new type (smart object frames) which take some figuring out but will let you do things you can't do with the other types. Like most things in Elements there are often many ways to get to the end result you want.

I like to make my own frames - it's so simple - however, they aren't as complex and beautiful as Jodi's.
Start with a new canvas the size of your finished frame. Fill the layer with one color - or gradient - or using ready made digital paper - or "paper" you made - or the background of a photo - then cut out the center using the marquee tool with your grid on for precise measurement - add a bevel and you have a frame.
Select the inside of the frame and copy/paste into selection - then use the move tool to precisely place your photos - and your photos are perfectly framed.

Glad you got it. :)
Tony has been messing with the smart objects for a while, I haven't quite got a grip on them yet. On the surface it seems more awkward and time consuming, but I'm sure there are some bonuses for the more creative types.:D

One of the first things I learned with PSE4 was what wonderful things "bevel" could do. And so simply.
