I have been using 5 for about two weeks now, and for the life of me, cannot find a selection for drop shadows...not even the books I have show a reference to it....I would really appreciate a tip. Also - where's the best place to get extra filters and so forth.
Thanks - Pam

Pam, you can find drop shadows by going to Window>Artwork and Effects, then select the middle icon in the dialog box (Apply Effects, Filters, and Layer Styles). Go to the dropdown box under Special Effects and pick Layer Styles. Then go to the dropdown box to its right and find Drop Shadows. If this doesn't get you there, we'll post some screen shots.
They tried to hide it....but we found it!

Thank you, Chuck - boy do I feel dumb - you'd think I would have found that on my own after 2 hours of looking! I wonder what genius decided that it needed to live hidden under layer styles instead of living somewhere obvious.
I appreciate your help very much.:)

Pam, I struggled to find it myself - and finally turned to this forum for the answer....! Just passing along the favor, as people here do day in and day out.

Thanks, Diana - boy, some of those are really exciting - of course, the ones I really liked weren't the free ones (smile). Thanks for taking the time to post the links for me.

FWIW - Drop Shadow has been in Layer Styles since PSE1.

Byron:
Yeah...but.....it required fewer keystrokes to find before, as Layer Styles was a separate choice on the Window menu, not nested in whatever they call the grouping now (Artwork and Effects?). I kept it on the desktop, bundled with Layers.
Just trying to challenge old brains like mine...

Chuck,
Ahh... the old days... ;)
Everything you say is true. The added functionality certainly brings complexity. At least the more seasoned among us have a historical reference to work from, when looking for features in the new version.
I recognize that someone starting with v5 as their first version could find themselves overwhelmed by the volume of options!
Let's stop talking about old brains, though... :p
