I am using PSE5 and now want to add Premier Elments3
My big Q is could I buy an Upgrade copy to work with the exisiting PSE5 ?

Does it work that way or must I buy a Full copy of Prem3

Also is software purchased in USA 'blocked' in any way from use in UK ?
[Full or Upgraded copies]

Would appreciate comment on both issues

Others might come with other information, but this is my understanding....

Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements are standalone softwares, no upgrades like big brother Photoshop. But, beware of certain features that are dependent on the combo that you have: Photoshop Elements 4.0/Premiere Elements 2.0 and creating your own DVD menus; Photoshop Elements 5.0 and Premiere Elements 3.0, capability of not having to send 5.0 slideshow as wmv (to edit or not to edit in Premiere Elements will be impacted by your choice). You lose such features by not matching up the marketed combo.

There might be legal issues if you try to buy an Elements product from another user, but, if you purchase as the first owner from retailer, I have not heard of problems related to purchase. There are many reports of Premiere Elements 3.0 bugs out there (check out http://www.adobe.com Premiere Elements User to User Forum).

Best to check out System Requirements (with Windows XP, you can get away with not having Service Pack 2 for Photoshop Elements 5.0 and Premiere Elements 2.0, but you MUST have Service Pack 2 with Premiere Elements 3.0. Also, remember when to use NTSC and when to use PAL related to where you are located.

ATR, thanks for the explanation. I have Elements 4 and Premier 2 that I bought from a retail store as a bundled package. I just bought Elements 5 and Premiere 3 as a bundled pagkage. So hopefully they will work together w/o doing anything special, right? I haven't installed programs yet.

Cmcburnett,

Check out Search in the Forums here for helpful advice for conversion from older to newer versions. If you cannot find them, I will try to find them.

Specifically, before you do anything, look for:

(a) transferring Organizer material from Photoshop Elements 4.0 to 5.0

(b) if you want to keep Photoshop Elements 4.0 and Premiere Elements 2.0 installed while you make up your mind about Photoshop 5.0 and Premiere Elements 3.0, you can have all four software installed on the computer at the same time. The key is using ONLY one at a time. My recollection is possible trouble with wrong HELP section showing up when you go to use Premiere Elements 3.0 HELP under these conditions. There is an Adobe document to handle that and is probably mentioned here as well.

(c) there seems to be a Track 1 bug in Premiere Elements 3.0...mention of Adobe update to handle that is posted somewhere.

As always check out system requirements, make sure your system is optimized (defragmentation, etc).

I will be watching to see if you need help finding the Threads involved.

Good luck.

Thanks for your contribution

I know that PSE5 & PREM.3 are designed to work together whether bought as a bundle or bought separately

What I would really like to know is if a PREM3 bought as an Upgrade
will install and work with PSE5 already installed

I was looking in the direction of an upgrade [To the bundle status if you like] because it is cheaper than a Full copy
I could have bought the bundle, but did not recognose the benefit I could have had at the time.

Win XP is current no PC problems
My understanding of NTSC / PAL is OK

I suspect that there is some confusion in the term "UPGRADE" and "stepping up to a newer version". Maybe we can figure this out together.

The following is my understanding:

If you have the big brother Photoshop and a newer version comes alone, you do not have to buy a full version of the newer Photoshop, you can buy the Upgrade package (cheaper too) which upgrades your existing Photoshop to the newer version. And, the result can be considered a step up in your Photoshop.

In contrast, with Photoshop Elements or Premiere Elements. Marketing urges you to UPGRADE to a newer version; but, here they mean step up to a new version by buying the newer full version. I have never heard of an Upgrade (in terms of non full version) that will upgrade an existing installed Elements.

Did you get your "Upgrade" from Adobe direct? If not, did it come in a box? How does the product ID compare to what you buy in a retail store? Another confusion with the term Upgrade, is that sometimes it gets mixed up with price break because you own a previous version. Some packing may have a large Upgrade label saying that you will save x$ if you are an owner of a previous version. In this case, the box content will be the full version.

Will be watching to see how this turns out. Curious.

Upgrade to me means having a product on board eg PSE4 and going to PSE5 for a price cheaper than a Fully priced non upgrade version

In a nutshell I have PSE5 installed
I want to get to PSE5 + PE3 [Equivalent to the Bundle offer]

My question is
Would having a full copy, boxed retail version of PSE5 installed, qualify me to buy an upgrade version of PE3 thus arriving at the PSE5 + PE3 Bundle. Rather than paying up for a normal standard retail, boxed PE3

Would buying the Upgrade version of PE3 install / work or not

I was hoping for response from anyone who had been down that route with any Adobe products

This is getting to be be hard work

BrianZero:

Here is another try at targeting the answer to the question that I think you are asking. Maybe I was picking up the wrong message with the terms that we were exchanging. This may repeat points that I am incorrectly picking up on, but here goes:

Bottom Line:
Premiere Elements 3 = Premiere Elements 3 = or should and should work with Photoshop Elements 5.0 installed. Get the rebate details from the Vendor and from what is on the packaging. You may or may not be required to have another Adobe product to quality for a rebate. OFFERS DIFFER. The Vendor may or may not be on the Adobe approved list. Call Adobe, Customer Service if in doubt, if you need to double check the Vendor.

More details, if you have the time:
I have been there with these rebate offers from Adobe (the one glued to the software box). Example, when I purchased Premiere Elements 2.0. In that case the yellow sticker on the outside of the box said $30 Mail-in Rebate, and the details on the top flap said “Rebate Terms, Must Submit completed form, copy of sales receipt, and Proof of Purchase (Tab #1) within six weeks of purchase….” This Tab #1 was from the Premiere Elements 2.0 box. I did not expect Premiere Elements 2.0 in the box with the rebate sticker to perform any differently than Premiere Elements 2.0 in a box without the rebate sticker and has not. In my case, a prior purchase of an Adobe product was not required. My vendor was on the Adobe approved list.

BUT terms differ from offer to offer. Check it out:

(1) Carefully read the details of the sticker on the box. Some offers may or may not require you having a prior version of Photoshop Elements 5.0 and/or Premiere Elements.

(2) Make sure that the retailer is on the Adobe list. Even if the box comes with a rebate sticker, Adobe may not recognize the purchase from certain vendors.

(3) Often the large retailers will offer an instant rebate from themselves and have you go after the additional Adobe rebate on your own. (As I said before, you may or may not get the latter depending on the relationship between Adobe and the vendor.)

Good luck. Hoping next to learn that at last we are on the same page and that you are busy creating using Photoshop Elements 5.0 and Premiere Elements 3.0.

Guess its the terminology thing
I am in UK
My guess u in USA ?
Dont think I have ever seen a rebate sticker over here

Dont think I am going to locate anyone who has actually taken this route to PSE5 + PE3
I will have to 'Bite the Bullet' and get full copy
Thanks for you effort - much appreciated

Hi Brian ..

Yes here in the UK we don't have rebates ...

but ATR us right in respect of the facts about upgrades ...

The upgrade aspect is purely a cheaper price that was offered to people who already owned a previous version. The software is the same just the price was different ...

... as it happens the whole question is probably academic as I don't think the so called "upgrade" price offer is still available from Adobe. However why not ring them and ask ...

Hi Wendy

Tried the 'Contact Adobe' route

Phone not answered [Mybe I should have tried more than 5 times]
Email, no reply since about three weeks ago

Just trying to eke out the pension, seeking the cheapest route to PE3

Think I now yield on this and pay up.

Thanks to all for their advice.
