View Full Version : ya know what would be cool ?

a chain letter scrapbook page.

 What ? You say ?

Someone starts with a blank page and adds something to it (one thing)...then sends it on to someone else here on the forum who would then add another image to it and that person would then send it on...and so on and so on.... we would have to keep it in a layered psd format and probably a zipped file for sending (we'd have to keep the image rather small at say no more than 700 X 700 pixels. After it's been around the world we can then display it in the gallery...Who's in ? Remember this could take a long while to actually be done.

If you think it's a dummy idea then that's fine...it was just a thought

it's called a compressed zipped folder on Windows>right click file>send to >compressed zipped folder. Then it's in a folder with a little zipper on it ;) Double click to open it.

Hmmmm, will mac users be able to open this ?

I haven't thought this through...obviously

Great idea but that zipped file is going to get huge, the psd's don't compress too well. A 1.9 mb psd I tried compressing at maximum went to only 1.5 mb and that had only one layer. Just thinking of the broadband challenged.
Do Macs have rar or some other compression programmes?

I think it's a great idea!

Maybe keeping it in a webspace somewhere would work better than emailing...I'll think about that one, maybe there's an easy answer!

Count me in! In the scrapbooking world...this would be very similar to what is known as a "circle journal" where one person does a layout (traditional or digital) and sends it to the next person on the list. I think this would be very fun!

I am willing to share some of my webspace -- but I'll need help in setting up a page that allows uploading/downloading of the image so each person in turn gets to work with it.

I really like the idea and the webspace would solve the problem with Mac vs Windows compression techniques.

If anyone has web development experience we can set up email to work on this project.

Another way would be to get PET Folks to give us some space as they already have mastered the upload/download process.

What do you think?

This sounds like fun. We could make it about our family so everyone can learn about each other! (guess I need a reeeeealy good picture of myself  ) And once again I've learned something! Didn't know anything about a zip file.

Maybe we can just have a page set up on the galleries if they would be so kind to let us. Since the limit is 20, perhaps we could have 2.......the mac vs the pc? This isn't a war, but it would be fun to see who works on what.

Jodi.........now see what you've started???

Wendy
July 30th, 2005, 10:26 AM
Pauline,

It doesn't quite work like that ... the idea is that each persons adds something to the initial image and it changes as it moves on. So there isn't really a theme to it ...

Wendy

Jodi Frye
July 30th, 2005, 11:15 AM
so sorry to have fallen behind on this thread...busy doing non pc stuff...anyways, someone made the point that the file would become too large to start mailing to each other and I think they are right. Again, I hadn't thought this through. Psd file sizes add up very quickly. I thought it was a neat idea but we may have to figure out a different way to do this.

Spyder
July 30th, 2005, 11:41 AM
Maybe we could flatten the image before passing it on, someone adds their layer, tweaks it then flattens it. It might keep the size down.
I have 30mb webspace and only too happy to provide it for file space whatever the decision is.

GaryK
July 30th, 2005, 12:07 PM
Another thought, would be to have someone "assemble" a bunch of images sent by each person. It would be a ton of work for the poor sod.
Maybe we could each have an element to get.

Hey, along those lines. We could each be assigned an object and post it to our gallery and everybody can make their own using the objects.

Not quite as fun as the original idea but maybe a reasonable workaround.

Gary.

What about setting up a new gallery type location and everyone adds a page to the gallery(2)?

Kathy
July 30th, 2005, 03:31 PM
What about setting up a grid overlay something like this?

http://www.scrapbook-bytes.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=43181&cat=9397

An example using the gird:

http://www.scrapbook-bytes.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=43241&cat=all&what=allfields&name=emurph2

First person adds a photo within the grid and sends it on to the next person who adds another and so on. This particular grid is 11 by 11 and holds 49 "photos". When the page is filled ...... start a new grid.

Just a thought.

I'd like to suggest we work towards getting webspace for the composite effort of everyone involved -- the PSD file will download to a MAC or PC (or should) without any problems and then when an individual has added their bit to the image -- they upload it to the chosen site. Then we would only need to set up something to control who has the picture at that moment in time -- not too much a problem as we can use a forum topic to managed the file access.

This would prevent several people accessing the file simultaneously and then posting their upon another etc.

OK, so I got 1 GB of webspace to use (nice real estate, undeveloped at the moment). I contacted Technical Help because I could upload and download a file that was small, but we aren't talking 2 MB or smaller.

I will arrange for migration to a server that doesn't impose a 2 MB limit on uploads -- then we can get moving on this project. I expect to have this accomplished by my birthday -- the 16th of August.

Finally found a script that does allow upload/download/file delete options which is what we'll need. Now I just need to get moved onto a server that accommodates our aspirations of a composite by multiple artists.

GOOD NEWS Y'ALL -- my web host pushed me up to 50 MB for uploading via PHP. I've tested a 26 MB file upload and download and it worked fine.

Now I need the four volunteers for testing to help out. I'd like to suggest that you announce when you're finished via this forum.

Spyder is first, then lindajay, then kerriann85, and then bwolford. I'm posting the URL for testing only at this time but I expect to have good feedback and ready to rock n roll come the 16th.

There will be a file that I created trying my hand with the Wacom Tablet tutorial -- not much but it is definitely something that can stand a little work. It is the only file and one thing we must do is rename the file in the box for that purpose and increase it by a value of 1; so test00, then would need to become test01, test 02, etc.

There is the ability to delete files as well and the older (smaller number) files can be deleted to keep the list short and manageable.

If you have more questions PM me.

Spyder
August 12th, 2005, 01:29 AM
Ok Will, it worked perfectly.
I added a layer, leaving the layer intact so it increased in size considerably. Did you want that or for the image to be flattened before uploading it?
That would reduce the size somewhat.

willpresley
August 12th, 2005, 07:03 AM
Spyder -- since we are testing we won't outgrow a 40 MB file size limit -- so leaving the layer intact for now is the way to go. I think we'll be able to leave layers intact for the main picture as well.

The only reason I didn't have layers in the file is because I flattened it when experimenting with uploads. A shame because it had layers quite like the Wacom Tutorial.

Any feed back you have let me know -- and Thanks for helping with the test.

Back on page 1 Jodi had a great idea -- and through thinking and reading it was determined that we need a central depository for the file so each person can access it in turn and then post their results.

At the present time we are testing the process to fine tune the final fun of building one File contributed to by many. Sort of out of many - one

I have my own domain with 1 GB of space and 20 GB of traffic per month so I set it up for this thread and everyone who want to participate. I had to get past the problem of file limits and my web host accommodated me by raising the limit from 2MB to 50 MB -- enough for us to work with.

Thinking about this I would like to suggest that DIAL-UP players get to go first as the file will get huge and then DSL/CABLE will definitely be needed to avoid an all-nighter of upload/downloading.

No problems, pretty self explanitory.
I think this will work just fine. It's pretty cool. Thanks for setting up the site Will!!
Next one up! :D

Questions to whoever gets to make the "Rules"... Jodi?
Are we going to allow more than one layer per person?
Are we going to be allowed to actually modify a layer that existed before or only build on top?
Are we not gonna have any rules whatsoever and just go for it?

Are we gonna have some kind of list of people and go in order like we did with the test?

Don't necessarily need answers right now, just throwing out some thoughts.

As for file uploads -- I'll modify the script to allow only a PSD file, which is why we need it anyway.

so that should help with security. Still the delete function could be misused but I don't think we have that kind of personality on the forum.

kerriann85
August 13th, 2005, 01:29 PM
Ok, take two. I wondered why the file size was smaller than the one before it.

Restricitng to psd files sounds good. Should the delete function be restricted to only one person to come clean house every so often? Or did we need to be able to delete the one before as we added a new one? (Even if it wasn't maliciousd it could turn into a big ooops.)

No, you're not an idiot -- this is a test process to find quirks that need to be stated to the group when we go final.

When you upload let it go until you see the file name posted on the page -- that will guarantee that it was a good upload.

NOT!!!

I assumed that since we had an image with a neon pumpkin, giant fuzzy worm (aka catepillar), a "roo" it must need a US Coast Guard Cutter on it's way out to duty from Key West.

I don't know why, it just seemed to call for a ship...

I didn't read the directions obviously because I couldn't UPLOAD until I DELETED the image with the same name. When I uploaded the image it shrunk by 1MB despite my added layer. Could it be that I turned Maximize Compatibility off. Did I do a no no? I can reload if I need to...

Who's next?

OK for those who are interested there are 3 files -- pumpkin is the original one I created using the Wacom Tutorial, Test05 is the final result of the limited members helping test the process.

Now I'll go back through the posts and see what I could have done better to facilitate the use of a primitive script that leaves the page open to little errors that can be BIG FRUSTRATIONS when one is dealing with uploading a file.

The download process seems to go fast, but upload seems to be slow and if you don't wait for the file name to appear then we get an incomplete file that won't load into PSE-3

Use this url to download copies for your review

It is the only way to get to this page as I don't have a home page built at this time and it secures the page to only the people reading this thread.

willpresley

Calling all dial-up players -- send me a PM if you are on dial-up and want to be early in the real action. The reason I suggest this is that the file will grow to 6 or more MB in short order and I remember dial-up takes some time to download/upload files. If you wait until we are over 10 MB then it could take up to a half hour to do either process.

Someone mentioned this and I meant to add something to it but forgot...
If all those who plan to join our collage party would turn off the ' Maximize PSD file Compatibility' ...we would be able to keep the file sizes down considerably.

Under preferences>saving files> Maximize PSD file Compatibility> set it to 'never'. Leaving it on adds a flattened composite image to the layered psd file so that the file can be opened in other programs that don't recognize layers...we don't need that.

Will, I'm using Safari as a browser. And as long as I do the smart thing and hit the arrows, it's working just fine.

I just downloaded all three pictures no problem. Scary looking project though!! I think when we set it up there will have to be a "rules" page to refer to (ie, that maximizing thing Jodi mentioned. ) Not removing anyone else's work, etc.

Linda -- Thanks for the feedback on the browser.

Pauline -- a few posts back I put a link to the new thread that contains the guidelines -- check it out and then let me know here if you think something needs to be changed.

Kinda want to keep that thread reserved for the project itself. Thanks, I appreciate all the feedback I get -- I'm so excited about this that I have been at the computer all day -- like a mother hen setting on eggs.

Found it Will and it looks good to me! Should be a lot of fun to see what we come up with. I guess the "original" picture should be posted with the final image too so that we can see where we started. :D

I agree -- so I should stash a copy of the begining somewhere safe and then bring it back online once we have a completed project.

I think this may be something we'll enjoy doing more than once.

I missed the need to rename, but you would think I could figure that out since I was the 5th person to touch it and the one I downloaded was test04... My suggestion would be a short list of steps included as it is passed from person to person... Same X steps in every handoff...

Even this idiot could figure that one out. :)

I think that would work out fairly well and copy/paste will do nicely to keep the instructions consistent. Thanks for the feedback.

Does it not work to put the instructions on the page where the download/upload is? Even a "click here for instructions" kind of thing? Since everyone has to go to the same place to get the pix......

Will,
Just wondering . . . would it be feasible, in the instructions, to have the most recent person first save their layered .psd file, and then save the previous one as a .jpg for web (small file size, and deleting the large, layered .psd), so that we could go back and see the entire history, as it evolves? I know, currently, only .psd files can be saved, but could that be changed? Maybe no one else would be interested in seeing the evolution, step-by-step, but to me it would be fun.

I think Will said in a previous post that he would delete each previous person's file, so perhaps instead of deleting he could save to jpg. I too think it would be fun to see it evolve. Maybe we're asking too much though of this poor guy who has put so much work into this!

Kerriann85 -- I tried editing the page (it is a script I got off the internet, and I couldn't figure out how to get a link there, but decided to do an instruction page and link the download script to it). I'll change the links in the forum to reflect this update.

Lindajay -- I like your line of thinking so in my instruction page I indicate that no deleting is done -- this will give me the chance to convert the images as they are done -- but what do you think about me posting them to pixentral in place of placing them on the website; I'm not sure how you'll want to view them -- if sequentially then leaving the pics on my website would be best.

Pauline -- this is what the test phase is all about seeing what can and can't be done or finding an alternative if need be -- managing the files for converting to PSD web-saved won't be too much for me to manage. It gives my web page a purpose while I develop my site.

I've changed the link to connect with an instruction page. From the instruction page there are 2 links that will get to the upload download page.

Check it out and let me know what you think, thanks.

hi Jodi,

Oh I took lots of images ... first at my youngest stepson's wedding then afterwards whilst we were on holiday.

Lots of editing to do but may get a chance to post some images in a week or two. :)

I've combined the original and final test images and posted them to pixentral so here is the link if you haven't already viewed them or just want to see them at the same time.

It's still on the chilly side here Wendy, around 18 - 20c day temp and 8c night time. Not long till spring though.
Just got through a wet week and looking forward to some sun for the next. It won't be long before we go 4 or 5 months without rain so we lap it up while it's here.
