Well Ladies and Germs, oh I mean Gentleman. ;) It is hump day yet again so here is your Creative Assignment for the week.

This week we will use Matt's Painting with Light video in the subscriber section. This is a wonderful technique to use on your images. Remember it does not have to apply only to people. You can have multiple places in your image that you want to paint back in to highlight. I hope to see some really interesting uses for this, as we are learning from each other.

If you have an image that you feel this technique has made quite a difference, please post a before and after shot using Pixentral.

And a BIG THANKS to everyone that has been participating. :D

Post your images here.

Good timing on this one Kimi. I took some photos yesterday at a park across the street from our vet's office (great place to kill some time while you are waiting for your cat to be released) and wanted to make the water look a bit more turbulent.

I actually selected the statue, the words, and the stars and filled them with white instead of painting the light in with a brush. Then I just HAD to add a few sparkles!

Not sure but I almost like my before better. Maybe I lightened it too much on the adjustment layer.

I think this technique is wonderful. It seemed just like magic when I watched that video. Last week I started what is going to be a long-term project: converting many, many old Ektachrome and Kodachrome slides to digital.

I have used this technique on more than half of them. Here are 2 (same subject) I did tonight after seeing the homework assignment.

Oh Ritage,

That is most excellent! Did you vignette it as well?

Here's one from the Germ :D :

Started out as a badly underexposed picture on the left (it wasn't really dusk when I took it). Minor variation, I protected the background while painting on the flower so as not to mess up the sky.

Rusty,
Thank you. There's no vignette. I just darkened the background after inversing the light-mask, plus a tiny Gaussian Blur.

I have finally the photo I wanted to Paint with Light. There are times when you just have to take the photo regardless of where the *&@ sun is  and that was the case in Broome.

http://www.pixentral.com/hosted/1zFiXxEEBOIDCo7b6NP0TKNYAvTyte1_thumb.jpg (http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1zFiXxEEBOIDCo7b6NP0TKNYAvTyte1)

It is a photograph of a Broomer pearler in a full diving suit and because the sun was behind the statue, it turned out as a very uninteresting silohette!!

Karen :)

PS I also blurred the background

here are my tries. this is really fun! the first one i lightened up the bushes, then i used another levels layer to darken the sky a bit.

This one i darkened my daughter's face, and also lightened the model's face on the billboard.

I did one where I used levels to darken blown out highlights, then painted those in. Seems to work in both directions. Hard to believe trains once crossed this trestle.

This exercise helped me understand adjustment layers better. I used a hue adjustment layer as well...

Here's my contribution. This is a Lily I grew last year. Never thought to do a PWL to it. I lightened the stamens and painted some shadow onto the bright pedal to tone it down.

Note: The image looks dotted because it's compressed heavily as a .gif.
