I am going through Scott Kelby's book "Photoshop Elements 5 for the Digital Photographer"

I was wondering if anyone else has tried the section on selecting on page 196 (the Polaroid).

When I select an object form another file to put into the polaroid, I can copy and paste it but the 'Paste Into Selection' is grayed out and that is what his instructions say to use.

Does anyone know why or what I am doing wrong?

Hi Ken,
I don't have the book, so am just guessing here. Have you made a selection of the area that you want to paste into? Should be marching ants around the selection, then "paste into" should work for you. If it's a Polaroid image, the center is probably black, so you could select it with the magic wand. Then paste into.

Ken,

I will amplify what Linda said because I had the same problem you describe the first time I tried this.

You open your target file and make the selection. As Linda describes, marching ants are around the space where you want it to go.

Then, without deselecting, you click back to the other file and select what you want to copy. Edit > Copy and then Edit > Paste Into Selection

It should work. The key is, your selection is still active (marching ants) in the target file.

Post back if not, somebody here will pick it up and help you.

and make sure you are on the right layer - if you aren't on the right layer - even though you will see the marching ants - the "paste into selection" will be grayed out
