View Full Version : Some Personal Gallery Musings

Gallery names. I enjoy reading them almost as much as looking at the galleries themselves (OK, maybe not quite that much, but I do like seeing how people express themselves).

We have: Kathy’s Collection, Inspeqtor’s Blueprints, the pictures, See my Stuff , My New Hobby, Gallery a la Kimi, Kimz Dayzoff, and, of course, Wendy’s World Gallery. There are tons of others that are sometimes entertaining, sometimes insightful, and always unique. I love 'em.

Mine used to read My Creative Outlet. It sort of fit, but I was never really satisfied with it. Recently, a friend of mine used the phrase “Digital Shoebox” to describe his online collection of images. I spent a few seconds wishing I’d thought of that, and then started musing on different names that fit my experience and feeling about the whole thing. The slate was pretty blank until I remembered that way back in the days of film and Costco Prints (the non-digital kind) we kept our photos in albums (and shoeboxes) on the closet shelf of a spare bedroom. The Closet Shelf had a nice ring to it, I thought, and it also described my own photo-storing experiences quite well (do I need a life or what?)

Then, on a whim, I looked up the word “closet” on www.webster.com (http://www.webster.com/).
The 3rd definition jumped out at me: a place of retreat or privacy. Perfect!

So, for all who may be interested (and thanks for reading my own little personal ramblings here), I officially unveil, The Closet Shelf (http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/gallery/view_img.php?id=16453).

DISCLAIMER: My grand plan was to have a bunch of new images to correspond with with the new name, but things have been a little hectic lately, and I figured a new name with old images wasn’t that big of deal. :)

Keep up the creativity!

Too Funny :D:D:D --- But what a wonderful Closet it is and so much wonderful stuff on the Shelf. I like it Mike...maybe I'll have to think of something new for mine as IT IS rather mundane. :)

Wendy-

Yes, I suppose it does...but then again, maybe in some strange way, it works...

Dorrie, thanks! I wish I had more time to update the images. Ah well...some day.;)

Very nice Mike.
My gallery is "Kimz dayzoff" because when I went to start my gallery Kimh was too short to use. I named my (ever so little 16 1/2 foot) boat "dayzoff". So I figured I would do the same for my gallery. It is what I do on my 'days off' and I also tend to 'daze off'. That's me!

Oh, Mike. Those were some inspiring ramblings! Now I feel so D-U-L-L in the gallery-naming game. I guess I'd better be thinking . . .

I like The Closet Shelf. I didn't know we could do a different name than our login when I started my gallery. But my signature link says My Imagination. Doesn't show much of an imagination when you look at my gallery.

I would love to think of a "something" , but right now...I am glad it just WORKS.

Actually, I like it when the gallery name matches the forum name (or comes close). It makes it easier to connect a gallery with a person. My gallery is "mrod", same as my forum name (probably should have made it m_rod, but oh well). But I really enjoy seeing the creative names for galleries in the different signatures.

And...I must disagree. I think your gallery is great! I really like this bird layout!

Hi Mike, you made me think - when I joined this forum this WAS my new hobby. New as in never done other than snap vacations photos, never owned a digital before, never heard of PSE, knew nothing about downloading, Pixentral, Plugins etc. etc. etc. I was going through my thick binder the other day and under a tab "Ideas to Do" I have your e-mails from December 4/05 where you very kindly told me how to put the photos into the numbers that you had done for your calendar. I was sooo impressed with that (still am). We both had version 3 and were talking about Scott's book on version 3. We had both stumbled on this forum by accident and were happy that we had. I didn't really start using the forum and programme until December 05 but now I would be lost without all this. I still think I can leave my signature as 'My New Hobby' because I am trying to learn something new every day. Whether it be with one of my cameras or PSE5. There is so so much to learn. I just said to a friend the other day that it was so exciting and satisfying to find a new hobby in my 60's and one that just keeps coming out with new updates to keep the mind active for many many years to come. Kind of went on didn't I but it is nice to think back on how this all started. Thanks for the thread.

Thanks Mike. I seem to do alot of montages. That one I put together real quick because people wanted me to post something I took in Vegas and I didn't take many this time since I was just there in July. I got alot of the birds at the Flamingo where we stayed.

I guess I should have said I need to change the My Imagination because I haven't had much of one lately. Not too many updates in my gallery lately. I think of stuff at work and can't do anything there because the software is set to only do tonal changes and vignettes, boring. By the time I get home I forget my ideas. I really should write them down.

I do also like to see the gallery name match the forum name so I know who it is now that you mention it.

Hi Kim ...

Once you have started your Gallery its not possible to go back and change its name ... so a lot of us have galleries in different names than our forum names (mine isn't too different but some others are).

About the only thing people could do would be to start again with a new forum name and make it the name that they used for their Gallery ... but its not idea :(

I've changed mine a few times since I joined but my new one pretty much says it all. Doing this is very theraputic for me and is indeed my escape from the reality of life.
