I was coming home from my son's basketball practice and had my gear with me. I finally got my moon shot! Woo hoo!! Check out the gallery. I made the background with my new Wacom pen - TOO easy and fun!!

Very Nice!! :D We have had so much rain and clouds here I didn't know the moon still existed. Tried for the full moon last month and all we had was clouds. I think it is full again the beginning of Feb. will have to check.

Lovely shot and I liked your background also.

Awesome shot. I can never seems to get one that good that it shows the detail in the moon. Mine always just look like a big whitish ball on black.:(

Nice shot! I have been trying to get the moon too. Missed an awesome opportunity a few months ago it was early in the morning. There will be another change ;)

Beatrice,

Great shot and wonderful background. I am not even going to try and shoot the moon, I only have a P&S and I think it would be a waste of time :D

Great shot Beatrice. I'll tried lots of times, but just can't seem to get it!

Good one! I was hoping to try tonight as it's going to be clear and I just got my long telephoto today. One catch - it's freezing cold outside (-15°C) - so it's going to have to be a very quick point and shoot. That will really test the image stabilization :) .

THanks everyone! It was a quick snap and shoot to get inside because it was a bit cold too. I shot RAW so I could make enough adjustments. It was at 1/125 - I think I could've gone a bit faster and captured a bit more detail. This was a good one though - cropped down. The first four shots were worthless. It is a tough subject to shoot!

Ray - I dont know about that... you guys do odd stuff up there in da north ;) might be a different moon too.

I just perused your gallery and all I can say is fantastic. I have got some ideas from your gallery but now I have to use them somehow. Great work and I'm envious. BillandCat

Beatrice: Not as good as yours but I did have to prove that the moon in Canada looks remarkably similar to the Japanese version :). I followed your advice and used RAW and went to 1/250, (at f5.6 ISO 400). Finished up overlaying an under and overexposed version of the RAW image to get detail on the bright and shadow sides.

Wow it looks great--and better because you captured more detail with the layers! And it does look the same as here! LOL I wanted to do the under/over exposure but I didnt have another shot. Did you use a tripod? Mine was a quick hand-held. Maybe I can try again tonight - since we havent had much snow lately our skies are clear more than usual.

Yea Kim -- I had the same problem and then I tried the settings that Kelby gave in his Digital Photography book (see pag 174) . Give this a try with a big zoom lens and see if it works for you...

tripod (duh)
Fstop: f/11
Shutter speed: 1/250th

Beatrice: I only took one shot, handheld - I just used the Raw converter in PSE5 to open two images from the same RAW file - one overexposed by about .5 and one underexposed by about 1.5. As long as the highlights aren't blown out that seems to work quite well. Can't remember where I saw the method but it sure beats messing around with taking multiple pictures and trying to line them up - as the images are identical they superimpose exactly (I used a layer mask with a gradient to blend them).

BTW I live at the same latitude as Sapporo so not surprising the moon looks pretty similar :) . Ray's a bit further north and he sees a lune not a moon up there :D
