Thought a nice hump day challenge would be good. We all want more creative things to do. But I am finding I need a push to get things done.
Hopefully we will see a few entries. :D
I'm off to look for pictures...

Thanks Kimi .. it was his first season of soccer (age 4) tough life.

I really like the elements in yours. I did not think about using non people. I think I will try it with some other photos I have taken.

It took me a while to get it just right with the gradient positioning but I am pleased with how it turned out and I had had this image in my mind just didn't know how to blend the images together.

4 is a very tough life. ;)

I found those on goggle. I too had to play with my gradient a few times to get just the look I was after.

Thank you so much, Kim. No she didn't lose, her coach (daddy) would not let her play when she wanted too. So she was pouting.

Kimi - I tried saving to target as - and got quite a scare. Originally the video came up and I did see it - then I got this sign = week2mp4 is encoded using MPEG=4 profile that Quick time currently does not support. Then I got this box saying something like No Windows Disc - and I could not get rid of it. I turned the computer off and it restarted with the same thing. Then I turned it off and left it for a while and it came on OK and I deleted the download. Don't know what happened. Looks like there are some good lessons there. Maybe I can load them into my husbands Ipod.
WEll - I tried.

Suzi - I get the tutorial subjects OK but when I click on download nothing happens. Now Kimi - there is nowhere I can see to download to desktop. I don't want to fool around with what he says in that thread because the way I feel right now I just cannot deal with any problems if it does not work out. I think I will pass on your challenge for now. Thank you for your help though. I do have Itunes but nothing seems to be straight forward these days. Or maybe it is the mind behind the fingers that is not working well - whatever

Thanks Suzi ... glad you enjoyed it. It's just two clipping groups. The bottom one is a custom shape and the top one is text (stencil font). The top layer has a 'buzz' filter on it ... hence the unimaginative text.

Thanks again. I like both of yours, but the dog is my favorite. Very nicely done.

Julie!

you did that with an eraser? You did very well. Check out Corey's other killer tips. One is with a crop shape. And Matt has a video in the subscriber area about crop shapes.

It is in with your cookie cutter tool. You drag it over your photo and it crops it in that shape. Let me know if you can't find it...

That is really cool. And the color of the dirt. Fantastic.

Not too late. It will be here until next Wednesday. Then I will try and come up with something else. If someone has suggestions please send me a PM. I hope to push us all to try something creative. Seems like that is what most of us are after. Hope enough people come to play.

Thanks Debra and Kimi. That challenge was for the friday challenge at www.howtocheatinphotoshop.com (http://www.howtocheatinphotoshop.com) I love doing this kind of work. The big thing is to make sure that all the pieces have the proper perspective and colour matching or it just looks wrong. Also setting things behind other things help to fool the view that it was actually in the picture. For this one the grasses were pulled up in front of the building and then the trees in the foreground also go in front of the building. All of this is accomplisheed with careful masking so that it doesn't look cut and pasted into place. After everything was where I wanted it, my last step was colour balancing it all so that they fit together. I changed the colour of the building to a blue rather than grey and then did a photo filter over the whole image as blue means cold and I wanted it to have that chilly wintery feeling to it.

Andie, thanks for the push. ;) and no hubby did not like it. He doesn't like much of what I do. He think things look better real. (now how boring is that)

Pauline, I remember in my photography book it talks about a good photograph having a front middle and back. Your image truly is wonderful.

Awwww Carol!! Now that is way cool!! :D My idea of creativity.

Karen I love it. Did you do it with the gradient or just a clipping mask?

Eleanor, You did a wonderful job. The gradient blended them together perfectly. Your daughters outfit is great.

To get your thumbnail to show up from Pixentral you look under your image and copy the entire link from the box that says forum.

hi,
i had no problem following the method that corey described for merging two photos. but when i tried multiple photos i had lots of problems.
Diane, how did you manage to get yours to work?
What i did was the following, more or less.
1. open 4 photos.
2. create a clipping mask grouping two photos together and apply gradient to mask.
3. do the same with another photo - but the mask seemed to put black on the layers that were not grouped.
not sure if this makes sense.

thanks,
eleanor

I love it. Did you do it with the gradient or just a clipping mask?

I used the method exactly as Cory described - grouping each butterfly with a mask and using the gradient tool. In the remake, I have used a clipping mask (as Cory showed at the very beginning of the tutorial) with a very high feather on it.

Karen :)

hi julie,
i finally figured it out (using clipping mask technique with more than two images). What i had been doing, which DID NOT work, was first copying all my images into one file, so i had a layer for each image, and then went about creating the clipping mask layers.

what DID work, was to first just put two images in the file and do the blend.
Then add a third image and do the blend. then add a fourth , etc.

let me know if it works for you.

Yay!!!!

Arrrrrrgh... I finally found these podcasts on iTunes and downloading the clipping mask I wanted.

Thanks Spotodog - I only found it through the Subscribers Area as you suggested. Part of the problem I think, was that my iTunes is connected to the Canadian Store and its a bit different; I was wandering around forever with no success. The casts sure take a while to download....

Thanks for your help too Kimi - I have it now!

hi everyone,
first of all, thank you kimi for this thread. it is great...i'm trying to learn lots of things and it's good to have a focus...

so i'm still struggling a bit with blending multiple images. i find that when i apply the gradient to, let's say, the third image, it ends up with a black thing over the first image. I can fix this up by using the Eraser tool on the gradient layer.

Is this necessary, or am i doing something wrong.

thanks again,
Eleanor

Eleanor

I have only used the technique with 2 photos. If I want to add more I use a layer mask to paint them in. I have a Paris collage in my gallery and that is how it was done. Have you downloaded Grant's tools? They have a layer mask in them and they are free. :D

What is the "Clipping Mask" supposed to accomplish? I did not use it, but to me it looks like the others.

lindajay
January 30th, 2007, 07:31 PM
It's a way to blend multiple photos into one, with a nice, smooth transition. When you say "it looks like the others," I'm not sure which others you're referring to. Give it a try, and you'll see the potential, I think. :) And, by the way, welcome to the forum. I don't think I've had the chance to tell you that before. :)

JulieM

uniqcrafts: I think your honeymoon images are beautiful and would lend themselves really well to the clipping mask technique. It would make the transition between the couple and the ocean much more gradual. Give it a try and see what you think...

Thank you, the Honeymoon picture was my Christmas present to my sister and her new husband. They took the picture of their cruise ship.

Do you have to be a subscriber to download or can you just be a registered member?

And thanks for the "Welcome" everyone says to hang out and you learn a lot of things. Boy if that's not the truth, it's unbelievable what I have learned already.

Thanks.

JulieM

Uniqcrafts: the clipping mask tutorial is actually available on iTunes, so you don't have to be a subscriber here to view it. It's free to subscribe to iTunes (and you don't need an iPod, just a computer). I think watching the Killer Tips videos there would be a great way to find out what the video tutorials here are like. But I'd sure recommend subscribing here - it is money well spent!

JulieM

Eleanor: Nice job on the apple picking images. Have you tried Kimi's suggestion using the layer mask technique? I'm going to experiment and see whether it's easier than the clipping mask because as you said, it can be quite tricky to get the gradient just right when applying it to the 2nd clipping group.

hi julie,
i haven't tried the layer mask technique...not exactly sure what it is referring to...i'm guessing it is just adding another image, and using a layer mask to mask out the edges more or less....i will try it...of course i'm at work and am supposed to be working, but i am addicted to this forum!!!! will try playing more with the masks tonight...

Does anyone have a link or website address for this IPod thing?

JulieM
January 31st, 2007, 06:51 PM
Uniqcrafts: You'll be happy you subscribed. In the meantime, iTunes can be downloaded here:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Be sure your computer meets the minimum requirements listed on that page, particularly for video.

Once you have iTunes installed on your computer, start it. Click on iTunes Store on left side of screen. On the next page, click on Podcasts. If you type "Photoshop Elements" in the search box at the top right, you'll be taken to a page where you can subscribe to the podcast. Specifically, its called "Adobe Photoshop Elements Killer Tips". That should get you going.
