I'm a new Nikon D50 owner and have heard that I need to buy some type of filter to go on the end of the lens to prevent scratching. Can someone give me a name or type that I can research? My lens is a 58mm lens.
Thanks!

Hello. I always keep a UV Haze filter in my lens to protect it. All camera manufacturers have their own and a good one is Hoya. You can get them at any camera stop and 58mm is a popular size so it shouldn't be hard to find. You can also get some good deals in them on ebay.

If the UV filter goes on the end of the lens, then what is the one that goes between the camera and the lens?

as far as I know, there is nothing that goes between the camera and the lens. I just went to our local camera store and bought a UV filter for my new lens. It is much cheaper to buy a filter than to scratch your glass and have to replace your lens. Actually I bought 2 filters, so if I am out shooting I don't have to worry about the lens cover but if my filter gets scratched I can just change it.

The filter goes on the end of the lens.
No filter goes between the camera and the lens.
The only thing you would want to put between the body and the lens would be various types of "extenders". I have no idea whether or not these are used in digital photography. In my "old film days", I occasionally used tubes or bellows for extreme macro photography. There are also "doublers" or "triplers" that would multiply the focal length of the lens - at a cost in quality as well as light transmission.

Yep, still in use for DSLR's. I have a 1.4x extender for my Canon DSLR.

Just a slight correction, while uncommon there are rear filters although they are generally used for speciality lenses
