I followed along through most of the video but for some reason I can't get my type tool to work. When I type, all I get is a straight line. I'm thinking it must be something simple that I am missing. Thanks to anyone who can help.

Hi Jackie and welcome. First thing to check is that your font is not too small and that the color is not too light that is won't show in your background. If that is all ok then reset your text tool. If you don't know how to do that, on the top menu after selecting the text tool, the click first T and a drop menu will give you two options. Select Reset. That should fix it for you.

You may also need to check your document's resolution -- extremely low PPI can result in miniscule text, too!

Kim - I reset the text tool, checked color and size of font, checked resolution as Byron suggested - still all I get is a line. I am stumped as I have used the text in other images and all was fine. I compared my layers palette with the video and I observed no difference. I'm going to go back and start from scratch - it has to be something simple - right? :o)

Hi Jackie ...
Just try this ...
Create a new File File>New>Blank File make it 1000 pixels x 1000 pixels RGB 3009 resolution.
Set your foreground colour to black
Now select the type tool ... and set it to Times New Roman 100 pt
Try typing ...
Does that work OK ...
If not then look at the top of the screen and in the top left hand corner (above the toolbar) you will see a T
Click on that and choose the option to Reset Tool

Horray! I missed the part at the end of the video about selecting all layers. I now have my type layer showing.

Jackie,
click Image > Resize and look to see what are the sizes, both in pixels and in inches, of your image. Also look at the resolution.
If your image is very large - anything greater than, say, 8" x 10", that is probably your problem.
Rusty
PS - I was typing at the same time as you, glad you found the problem.
