View Full Version : Strange files installed with Elements 5

I've just installed Photoshop Elements 5 on Windows XP and I discovered some new files installed in the parent directory (C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 5.0\) which appear to belong to the Opera web browser (which is not installed). These files are opera.dll, opera.ini, opera.jar and opera.png

The opera.ini file can be opened in Notepad and the first line reads "This file should not be edited when Opera is running". Google says that "opera.dll belongs to the Opera web-browser", and opening opera.png reveals the classic red Opera logo.

So I ask myself, what the heck are they doing in the Photoshop Elements folder? They were obviously installed from the CD (a genuine Adobe Photoshop Elements CD) but why?

Can anyone shed any light on this conundrum please?

Thanks

Pip

I found this in an old thread on the forum and seems to have an explanation:

I have an idea, but this is rather a long shot...

Control - Click (Right - click if you have a two button mouse) on Photoshop Elements Help icon, inside Photoshop Elements 3 folder. Choose "Show Package Content"

Go to Contents : Mac OS

Double-click on Opera. Opera is a web browser, and it's the help engine for Photoshop Elements 3. This will start Opera.

Click on Opera / Preferences, then choose History and cache (it's the 3rd option from the bottom).

Finaly, in that screen, click Empty Now, just beside Disk Cache. Click on Apply Now (at the bottom of the screen) and on Ok after that.

Quit Opera. Hope this will solve your problems :)

Diana: You're right. Elements uses Opera as its web page browser. Don't remove it unless you want to break Elements

Thank you both. I thought my PC had really screwed up big time or that some mysterious forces were at work!
