I decided to start using RAW, but wasnt sure how it would go, so I used RAW+FINE (on my new D80) because the images were important. But now Ive run into a problem. What does one do to preserve both images in photoshop elements organizer, without having duplicates?

They may have the same start to their name but will have different extensions (.nef and .jpg). That should let Organizer differentiate between them.

Right, but then they both appeat separatly in the organizer. Is there a way for them to automatically be included in version sets or anything?, also, I havent yet been able to make PSE4 recognize my raw files. It shows the broken pic icon for all of them, even though lightroom does them fine. Can someone direct me to where i can solve this problem?

Have you updated the Camera Raw Plug-In to 3.6? You can get it at the Adobe download site. You'll need it for the D80. Once you do that it should show in the Organizer - mine do in PSE5 - and you can then work with them.

Yes, Ive downloaded ACR 3.6, that was the first thing I did. It doesnt work. Ive tried re-installing it, and it still doesnt work. Should I forget about it and use picture project to convert my NEFs to DNGs and not worry about keeping my NEFs besides for the ones embeded in the DNGs (I dont know what that means but if I ever need it Im sure I could figure it out)

Go to the Adobe RAW (http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html) page to see more information on the plug-in that Tony mentioned.
With regard to the double-image issue, can you limit your import to just either the RAW or the JPG version? I am a Windows XP user and during import, I can sort entries by file-types inside the Import window. Then, I manually select everything *.jpg before clicking [OK]. This way, only the JPG version will appear inside the organizer. Vice versa for the RAW files.

Right, but then they both appear separately in the organizer
They are different images, so I think you want them both to appear in Organizer if you're going to use Organizer as the jumping off point for editing. To differentiate them, go to the Organizer preferences (Edit>Preferences>General) and check the box "Show File Names in Details". Then you'll be able to see which one is the jpg and which one is the nef.
Someone else will be along to answer the question re version sets - I don't use Organizer so I don't know what a version set is.

Where did you put it? The Camera Raw.8BI file needs to go in the Plug-Ins>File Formats folder.

Tony, is there something that he has to do to disable the Nikon software in order to let ACR take over?

It goes in:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 5.0\Plug-Ins\File Formats

Just make sure that there is not a nikon file in the same directory mentioned above.

Not sure if you can make version sets of NEF + JPEG - I think it's only for edited files. I put mine together in stacks but I can't remember if stacks was an option in PSE4. In PSE5 you just select the ones you want to stack, right click and select stack. Works very well when you have a bunch of similar photos that you want to group together - and expanding to see what's there is very simple.

Chuck - I'm glad someone answered as my Nikon software is still sitting on the CD that came with the camera - I learnt the hard way never to install CD's that come with cameras - it usually causes problems and rarely offers anything that I don't already have with Photoshop/Elements. :)

Tony, I agree! The only piece of Canon software I've loaded and kept is their PhotoStitch, which makes panoramas. I've found it to be superior to Elements in terms of its ability to make seamless stitches. But I rarely do panoramas, so I'm not sure my data is statistically significant...

I have not installed any nikon software. The only thing in my file formats folder is the camera raw file (besides all the ones that come with it) Nothing from Nikon. Does it matter if I have bridge, organizer, photoshop cs2, elements, and all the other CS2 programs installed at once, do I have to update the raw files for ALL of those?

Shouldn't matter - if you put it in Elements 5 then a D80 NEF should open from 5. Funnily enough when I first updated it didn't work and I was cursing. Then I went back and checked file sizes (the only way I know to tell as they all have the same name) and found I'd updated my PSE3 but not PSE5. Once I sorted that out it worked fine. So it is a good idea to update everything and check file sizes to see that they are all updated (3.6 should be 5464kB).

Thanks for the help guys. Thanks for the tip about file size. I checked elements 4.0 and I had the right file in there, still doesnt work. I decided that I didnt want to have to go through this again when I got 5, so went ahead and had my cousin put it on. (he's a tech geek and his company has a bulk licence for Adobe, Microsoft, etc) When I coppied the camera raw file from 4.0 to 5.0, it worked like a charm. makes me wonder if 3.6 was not designed to work with 4.0... if so it seems like not good business practices to cease support for old software when you release a new version... even though its old its still perfectly good...
