Well another tutorial has been posted and its a nice variation on the other one ... so who has tried it yet?

I happen to know that Mike has done one using it ... so come on Mike post a link to it :)

I still trying to find an image to use it on but I'll post a link to mine just as soon as it is finished ...

Rich,

Humble????????

I think you must be kidding. I love the simpicity, the colours and the way the main photo is faded. Really draws the attention to the photo subject.

And ..... I've seen your gallery also. And the picture of the turtle? Wow! I think you are already in "the upper ranks of this class".

July 24th, 2005, 06:04 PM
Thanks guys. I originally had the background a lightish sepia color then changed it to grayish to match the wall behind the guy.

Font is maybe Mariah. I think that's the one I settled on finally.

By the way..... I sent that filmstip pix to him. He asked if I'd be around in AUgust to shoot another concert with a different group with which he plays (I happen to know all 5 of the members even) He's wanting to make a holidays concert poster and needs some new pix. I also dropped the cd of other pix in his mailbox and haven't heard back yet. Wonder what he thought.....and if there will be money involved.

I think I'm missing something. In the new Border Focus tutorial Dave Cross mentions in the video that there was another movie by Matt (?) that explained how you could apply multipile filters..........well I'm lost as to what movie he's talking about. Could someone point me to this movie.

Also for Wendy---would you be so kind as to explain how you put your border of stars and frame around your kitten. Linda Sattgast would love this photo for scrapbooking, and so do I. I would like to do something like it with my cat that I lost to the kitty heaven.

I don't understand why my above post is not showing up as a new post. I'm still learning how to use this forum so it's probably me not understanding how it works. If anyone can answer my question above on the Border Tutorial I would really appreciate it.

Wendy

Hi Dorrie,

I used a similar technique to the tutorial but instead of doing a stroke around the edge I selected the stars brush and built up several layers of stars around the edge of the cut out ... I used the cut out as a guide and kept changing the size and colour of the star until it looked OK.

Once I got going it wan't too difficult to do. Its easier if you use a new layer for each colour and size ... then when you are happy with the star effect just merge the layers.

If you need anymore help just let me know :)

Just back from 2 weeks vacation back in Canada....
It's great to see the images people come up with based on our video tutorials - that's really what I always hope for is you folks taking the basic idea and running with it, making your own variations, etc.
Please do keep posting your variation for all our videos - it will inspire others, no matter whether you think it is "worthy" or not.

(I mention that because I know many people are hesitant to post their work because they think it's not good enough or because they're just starting out. But believe me, every time an image is posted, someone gets a new idea or is inspired to try something. So, let's see YOUR image!)

Welcome back Dave. I see you didn't melt in Montreal ;) Hope you had a nice time. I'm not making it up this year ...just spent $16.95 to mail a package to Mom in Quebec !...B'day gift that I usually hand deliver. Hopefully next year.

So all, I finally got arounf to tinkering with that tutorial;

Here is another variation using Danielle's favourite lemur:

http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?pic=1N4dJsHaAdDLqSOJ1qQupWXT4iaL1

I used a cookie cutter shape to draw the selection, created a large border (20 pixels) and then applied Gaussian Blur to the border.

Mike

Jodi Frye
July 25th, 2005, 06:08 PM
Mike, that's adorable ! Nice effect.

Wendy, actually it's the craquelure filter in the Textures menu. Drop the spacing to 2 and play with the crack depth slider. The fine lines were the ' find edges filter' which I desatured and then put in darken mode and lowered the opacity. Don't ask what order...I just played with the layers. I don't keep track. :? Oh ! That outside egde was the glass filter>tiny lenses>on a not straight edge..I had different ideas in the beginning so the edge was erased off a bit in different angles. When I applied the filter it looked cool so i left it. I was totally bored with how it was turning out so I spiced it up a bit.

Kerri, i'm sorry...I can go back and see if I missed a step in the way I described how i did it.

kerriann85
July 25th, 2005, 06:14 PM
Jodi, I was just trying from memory and not having much luck. Can't find the message with your instructions that I wasn't smart enough to print. Do you know where that was?

Jodi Frye
July 25th, 2005, 06:25 PM
kerri, i put 'crosshatch' in the search engine ;).....so this is a copy

Kerri, it's really quite simple. All I did was desaturate her with an adustment layer but I painted the eyes back in a bit. I can't recall if I used levels to lighten the image or whether I lightened it from the same hue/sat adjustment layer...but anyways, I lightened it. Then I used a feathered rectangular marquee around the inner edge and applied crossed hatch and angled strokes . Then with another feathered marquee closer around the inside I applied a gaussian blur. My feathers are generally pretty high. Then just duplicate the image and transform the top image so that it's smaller, add a drop shadow and that's it. I think I probably lighted the bottom one more afterwards. I don't take notes but this is what I remember since I just did it a couple of weeks ago.

Oh wait, looking at it now I do remember making a large stroke on a new layer>lite>center, apply gaussian blur...for that slight outer lighter edge.

Jodi Frye
July 25th, 2005, 06:27 PM
more...

Hi Kerry...it's in the filter menu under ' brush strokes' I used both crosshatch and angled strokes...I have no clue of the settings...I just eyeballed it in the preview screen. Keep in mind that you'll be applying a gaussian blur afterwards to soften the strokes.

PS, use a crash dummy layer...duplicate the layer first and then play. I always make crash dummy duplicate layers...sometimes I have too many of them. Anyways, they are trashable as well as keepable...depending on the outcome of the accident

Sarah, that is a really nice page. Yes we know what it feels like to lose a cat. Our old cat wondered off when my daughter was around 2. When she turned 4 and started pre-school I went to the shelter and adopted 2 cats...which wasn't my intention at all. I had planned on getting her a kitten but the only kittens they had weren't ready to be adopted because they were sick. Looking down at the cage below the kittens I see 4 golden eyes looking up at me. They were brother and sister, black as night, around 8 months old. All it took was 4 seconds after the caretaker opened the cage for me. I had four golden eyes in my face, 1000 whiskers tickling my cheeks and 8 paws in my lap. I had no choice... :)

That little lady was a spectator at, what else, a gym meet. She wouldn't stop crying during the awards ceremony. I turned to her, she saw my camera, and she started giggling. I turned away she cried. I turned back she giggled at the camera. A BIG ham. I took 5-10 shots of her and she settled down. Mom and dad thought I was a perve (I didn't know them, they didn't know me). I gave them a phone number and email address and sent them the pictures.

Pauline,

Anyone can see that it won't be long and you will be picturing those hands again with wedding bands on them. Wish you all the best. Just remember that just because you get them married off, you can then relax. It doesn't happen that way. They are your kids forever. I've got 2 girls now 40 and several times a week they call to chat or get advice, or need a shoulder to lean on, or need work done at their house. But it's all part of life and the Grandkids make it worth while. Love them all.

Pauline
July 27th, 2005, 11:49 PM
Pros..........whoooooooo Dorrie, I don't think I'm anywhere near that range, but I'll sure take the compliment!!
Just keep following along and you will be amazed at how fast you start getting creative. Well, you already are. :D You did a beautiful job on yours and the kitty foot prints add that extra touch. In the beginning I wasn't very confident, but with everyone's tips and good advice I started feeling comfortable and just went with the flow. I think once you take the pressure off yourself and realize it really isn't a competition it makes a big difference..........well maybe it is a competition..... I'm trying to think outside the box like Wendy does and push myself a little more to try and think of something different. You might like to try yours using a cat paw print as the centre.........go with it and experiment. That's the beauty of it all. Nothing is wasted and every try at something new could turn out to be a fabulous piece. I did this one 3 times and did each one different. (the first I didn't post it went to a friend and it was just like the video)

Gary, I believe I like the second one better too, but I wish I could figure out why I can't desaturate that one section. Maybe tomorrow after a good night sleep I will look at it again.............or start from scratch!!

Pauline
July 27th, 2005, 11:59 PM
 Rich let's hope I have a few more years before I have to worry about that! She's only 16. Time does seem to be going by a lot quicker now that they are all teens though. If this is the guy she ends up marrying, I would be all to happy. He's wonderful to her and also very respectful of us and our rules (since he is 19 and doesn't live with his mom any more it could have caused a lot of problems) In the past 16 months he really has become part of our family and eats most of his dinners here!

Pauline
July 28th, 2005, 12:32 AM
Dorrie, there is one thing that I find distracting in your photo and draws the eye away from your beautiful cat. The top left corner inside the rectangle where the wooden deck ends......there is blue/grey there from the flooring and white from the wall behind. I think if it were me, I would probably clone that floor right up to the border. It might not be to obvious that it doesn't match the rest because the rest is greyed out and it would be less distracting. It's the only way I could think of to fix it other than move the cat down!! (now there would be a big job!!)
See you shouldn't have called me a pro. Swelled my head and gave me big ideas.

I don't think that's it's as noticeable that more wood was added than not adding it. What my tired mind is trying to say is that you don't notice it where the change in background is more noticeable.

Now it really is time for bed since I'm not sure whether how I said that makes sense.

Dorrie,

That really is good .... Its a great photo and you have done the effect well. I love the footprints with the drop shadow ... very nice. A true pro's work :) :)

If you do want to get rid of the little corner then a very easy way to do it is by a similar method to the way you did the background.

Try this:

Make a rough selection of the area like this one:

http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?pic=1AdfGu9Tnrl2RujO05MRgdT6AG8uLr

Feather the selection Select>Feather (you will need to experiment with this one ... the higher your resolution and the larger your image then the more feather you will need) If the image you posted is full size then 20 is OK if the original is larger then try 50ish.

Then simply do Hue & Sat like you did on the background.

When you have a selection made then H&S will only apply within the marching ants and the high feather means that the change will feather out so you don't see a harsh line

Here is what I did with it:

Pauline and Wendy,

Thank you both for your wonderful comments. I hadn't even thought about that section of the image being corrected, but after both of you offered suggestions, now I know I need to be more observing of small details.

Pauline you definitely had the right idea, but I think I prefer the way Wendy changed it.

Thank you Wendy for showing me how to do it your way. It certainly did make and improvement.

You people are awesome with your help and it is greatly appreciated.

I had to put my kitty down about a year ago as she was extremely ill. She was 10 years old. I do miss her very much. As a Senior Citizen it's nice to have a companion, and she was one to me. So it was hard to do this photo, but I'm glad I did. She was gorgeous wasn't she.

Thanks again, Dorrie

Dorrie,

Losing one of our beloved pets is always hard ... but I like to think of all the happiness they gave to us .... and hopefully the happiness we gave to them. That way it seems to make things feel a little better ...

Its an excellent image ... and she was really beautiful. I bet she was fun to have around :)

Dorrie, it's always difficult to loose a pet, but when you get finished I think you should print this one and frame it. It's lovely.

I'm a decorative painter, so I'm a stickler for the 'little' details. I like to do detail work in my painting. When I first started painting, I didn't notice much.........then we'd go for a car ride and I would note the colour of green of the trees, the colour of the sky. It just brought out a whole new way of looking at things.

It doesn't matter which way you choose to change the photo. The whole point is that there are options and having Wendy give another option not only shows you two, but also shows me another way also, so everyone learns from this.

The very best way to learn is to always be open to suggestions. You might prefer your way better, and that's okay, but knowing that there are tons of ways to do it not just one is what will make your creations improve. I'm always open to suggestions and ideas and often ask my kids. (they are brutally honest  )

Wendy,

Well I hope this is an improvement. Actually I did what you suggested about the feathering and H&S, plus I did a little cloning to make the bucket and table stay inline with the faded background. It's all a learning process isn't it. Thanks for help, and I'll keep trying.

Hopefully I'll be able to do a Gallery page before too long.

Dorrie ...

You have made a really nice job of doing that ... and it makes all the difference with the cloning and colour changes. :)

In fact I think that it would make a nice Gallery image ... so maybe you should put it up there !!!

Here's one done of my niece's little daughter. She is such a sweetheart and really reminds me of my second daughter at that age (not the one with the boyfriend picture).

tried a difference frame again and different colour for the background. I like the way it turned out.

Gerry.......wow 102. Your Mom sure looks great. I would never have her pegged for being that age!

GerryB, that's a beautiful page and wow -- 102!!! My grandma just turned 95....I'm so grateful that she's still here with us.

I tried this one more time using a different application on the border...and don't ask what my obsession with these birds is...I swear I just want ONE good photo, and since i can't seem to get one, i end up using them as tutorial fodder instead, waiting for one good photo to happen...LOL.

Okay -- I finally tried the border effect, too. This is my daughter-in-law and one of their FOUR Welsh Corgies, Max.

Linda I love it!! The way the "dogs" ears stick out of the frame and the feet is perfect. How did you do that background? It looks cool.

July 29th, 2005, 12:08 AM
Pauline, I used Filter>Brush Strokes>Spatter to get that pebbly look on the background of the photo itself -- is that what you mean, or do you mean the borders?

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it, Pauline. I call this picture the "Easter Corgi"

Yes Linda, I meant the background not the border. What a cool look. I really have to start experimenting with filters more. I have a tendancy to just click it and see what it looks like but never thing of making a selection rather than using the whole picture. There are just so many options I don't know why anyone would want photoshop CS when elements seems endless. :D (I realize you can do more in CS.......but geeze who needs to??)
