Black photos in media panel

Hi, I'm new to the forum and to Premier Elements 3.0 and have already read some very useful tips for PE and PRE here. I do have a question (maybe several) :).

I'm using PRE 3.0 and am working on a slide show. When I bring my jpg photos into the media panel, about half of the thumbnails show black (blank) instead of the photos. These black photos are not viewable in the preview window nor can I add them to the sceneline. I have 2 GB of memory. All the photos were converted from raw using the same conversion program.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your help.

Upon further observation, some of these black photos do appear in the sceneline if I drag them there but they are flipped in reverse. And, some just don't appear even if dragged to the sceneline--they just stay black. This seems to be very odd behavior. Any ideas from the experts on the board? Thanks!
