Some additional information from you might give us a clue on the source of your problem. We can try to analyze your problem but in the end, I might suggest that you call Adobe tech support.

Do you get any additional detail with or before the message that Elements must close?

Do you see the window displaying the Slideshow Preferences (which you can then change) or does it fail before you see that window?

Do you have a DVD player/burner on your PC? If yes, what DVD player software do you have installed on your machine?

I'm having this same problem. There is nothing more I can add to describing what it is doing.
I installed Elements on thursday. I used the slideshow on friday and it worked great. Then today, sunday, I go to create a slideshow and when I open the drop down for create and click slideshow my computer will make some sounds like it is doing something but the only thing that comes up is the report error box and this is the error that it says happened
AppName: photoshopelementsorganizer.exe AppVer: 5.0.2.0 ModName: qedit.dll
ModVer: 6.5.1.900 Offset: 00018ff3

Hi, and welcome to the forums. :) Sorry you're having trouble.

Qedit.dll is a component of Microsoft DirectX. The version number you've quoted (6.5.1.900) is from a very old version, around 2001.

As far as I know the current version is 6.5.2600.2180, which was distributed with XP Service Pack 2. Service Pack 2 is one of the system requirements for PSE6, so it may well want the later version of this file. I can't put my hand on the system requirements for earlier versions of PSE, but SP2 has been out a long while now, so it may well be required for others, if that's what you're using.

Do you keep your machine patched up to date from the Windows Update site?

However, I don't really understand why it was working, and has now stopped. Did you do anything to your machine between Friday and Sunday that might have caused a change? (E.g. installed any other software.)

No, I did try to install the Premiere Elements but it didn't work because I don't have the right processor. But I didn't work on it any until last night because I was at work. During the weekend the only thing I had time to do was check my email before work. And I have XP so if I searched for a update do you think that would work?

If you post what version of Photoshop Elements or Premiere Elements you are using, I will put together the Adobe TechNote links for troubleshooting some of these issues.

In both cases presented under this single Thread, are we dealing with the same problem, namely you go to Create and click Slideshow and then nothing??? Or other?

I will try to make some suggestions, but problem resolution is not a one size fits all. So, details are important.

ATR - I think we've got two separate problems. The OP hasn't replied to Barb's request for more details, so there's no reason yet to conclude that it's the same issue, just a similar result.

green_ninja - if you've got an old, unpatched version of XP, then that could easily be the issue, especially if you've not loaded SP2. The fact that Slideshow worked once, then stopped may even be a red herring. Perhaps a second or subsequent use calls a feature that wasn't invoked the first time, I've no idea. I'd make sure that your copy of XP is up to date by visiting the Windows Update (http://www.update.microsoft.com) site. (NB - if you've not got SP2 installed that'll be a large download, and there'll be a load of other subsequent ones as well.)

I suppose it's also possible that the failed Premiere install caused trouble.

But, as ATR says, details here are important. What software versions have you got, and what are your machine specs? The base specs to get PSE/PE running are not terribly onerous, although admittedly I doubt it'll run well at them - but that'd be a performance hit, not a crashing issue.

The version of Photoshop Elements I got is 5.0.2 and for the computer a 2.20 GHz AMD processor, 512MB with 200 GB drive.
The problem is just that, I open Photoshop Elements, click view organize photos, create, slideshow, and the computer will start running like it's about to do something major for about a second then I get the pop up for the report error or don't report and when I click the details this is what is says
AppName: photoshopelementsorganizer.exe AppVer: 5.0.2.0 ModName: qedit.dll
ModVer: 6.5.1.900 Offset: 00018ff3
and when I click send report after it's done doing that the program shuts down.
I also just got finished installed the Service Pack 2 update, it said that all files were updated and I restarted, twice, and the problem still happens.

Hi,

Is it still giving the same version number for qedit, even though you've installed SP2?

If so, I'm a bit baffled. It's possible some other piece of software has placed a copy of the early version somewhere that PSE is picking it up.

Try using Start>Search to see where qedit.dll is located on your machine. There should be a copy of the later version, which is 549kbytes in size, in C:\Windows\System32. The older version is considerably larger.

But I am extremely reluctant to advise messing about with dll files because of the risk of stopping other, perhaps more critical, pieces of software working.

The computer specs should run PSE OK, although you'd benefit from more RAM. I wouldn't have expected a shortage of RAM to stop it working though. Do you have a reasonable amount of free disk space, and have you defragmented recently?

How big of a slide show? I'm running one right now with 319 pictures, random transitions and full audio with no problems at all.

Also, how much HDD space is filled? Saw in one of the books that PSE5 uses the HDD for virtual memory and since you only have 512 it will use some of the HDD if it needs it. If the HDD is pretty full or seriously fragmented you may get some errors. Try running disc-cleanup and defrag and see if that helps.

My specs:
Intel C2D 6600, 2gb ram, 250gb HDD, WinXP Pro.

Yep I'm still having the same problem. I even called Adobe and talked to them and nothing was able to be figured out. Best thing that I was told was to just uninstall and reinstall. Which I did and still no go. And I should have enough of the HDD cause I rebooted the whole system back to specs the week before.

I am not sure why previous suggestions from Adobe and here have not helped. I am offering the following for you to review to see if you might pick up something that was said previously and you missed.

Adobe TechNote
Troubleshoot system errors or freezes in Photoshop Elements 5.0 (Window XP)
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=333200&sliceId=2

Look at Memory and free hard drive space in terms of numbers. Speaking to RAM, 512 MB is not going to meet your needs when you are dealing with ambitious projects.

I am now managing nicely with 1 GB (Photoshop Elements 3 and Premiere Elements 2 and good size projects). When I tried to install Premiere Elements 2 (with my 512 MB RAM), the Help files would not open (most of the time). Adobe T/S did not have an immediate explanation. The clue came when I found that unplugging printers, scanners, shutting down programs running in the background, and defragmenting a lot helped. Going to 1 GM completely removed the problem. This may not be your immediate problem, but it does warrant looking into: amount of RAM as well as set up of virtual memory. Bottom line: memory problems can cause some strange happenings.

Also, review recent programs removed or installed. I ran into recent strange messages about missing dll files in one program after I removed an unrelated program from the computer.

The solution is around the corner. Just go through the checks in a systematic way.

Apart from the Technote that ATR has pointed you to, I'd suggest two further things (implied in the TechNote, but easily overlooked):

1) Since your system rebuild, have you brought your graphics card drivers back up to date? PSE requires a DirectX9-compatible driver, which may not have been in the original build.

2) In a similar vein, since the error message refers to a DirectX file, try running Dxdiag (Use Start>Run, then type dxdiag in the Run box). That will report which version of DirectX is installed on your system, and the second tab will show you whether there are any problems with your system files.

I'll echo what ATR said - dll related problems are often not actually caused by the program that is encountering difficulties, but occur because some other app has corrupted a file, or overwritten it with an inappropriate version. Very frustrating.

Good luck!

I've been having some problems with PSE5 slideshows as well. One problem I found was that one of the windows updates included Microsoft Media Plus which, even though I have never even opened it, seems to have become my default slideshow program. I know nothing about the program and couldn't even open it without registering it-I don't need another media program so I deleted it (hopefullly not causing other problems somewhere else!). I'm still having issues, but my PSE6 should arrive any day now, so I'm not going to fiddle with it. If you go to the windows updater, you can review your past update downloads-you might want to check it out.

JKBaum,

I know it's been a while since you posted your problem, but I didn't see any responses. I was having the exact same problem (with a similar configuration to yours) and filed a trouble ticket with Adobe. I finally received an answer with some suggestions. Fortunately, the first suggestion fixed the problem - I had to uninstall InterVideo WinDVD (it was a pretty old version). Here's a link to the TechNote they referred me to with additional suggestions:
