View Full Version : Who knows cars ???

I only have 3 photographs of my grandfather. This one came out of a shoebox; of course it's undated. The automobile just screams 1930s to me; can anybody pin it down closer than that?

My grandfather was born in 1891 so early 1930s would put him in early 40s and that looks about right to me looking at his face in picture. (I haven't touched this image yet)

Thanks for looking,
Rusty

Rusty and Steven -

Wish I could help, but I don't recognize it. I'm sure someone will know it though. Cool picture regardless. (Is Pixentral down??)

Sorry, I thought it had the model information on the page. These are 1934 or 1935 Ford Sedan Tudors. Carnut.com has tons of car pics to look at. Hard to tell without seeing the front end of the car though. Here is the main 1934 Ford page

Thanks, Jodi,

I suspect you may be right: a mid-1930s Ford. That would make him at least 45 years old in that picture and the facial features fit with 45 to 50.

I can remember, as a child, he had a Ford. You know how it is, people tend to stick with one brand, especially in those days. When I fix this picture I'm going to caption it, "Pop, about 50 years old."

The car I remember was much cooler than this one - it had a rumble seat! Can't you imagine our current Nanny State going berserk if somebody road around today with a 5 year old in a rumble seat! I thought my mother was going to die when she saw that :) I thought Pop was really a good guy :D

I can't open the Pixentral picture either, but from the post, it looks like a '32 Ford Coupe.

You might find it here

I would guess '33 or '34 Ford.
The rear fender on the '34 looks too thin.

I think you have either:
a 1934 Pontiac 5W Coupe
http://www.carnut.com/cgi-bin/04/_image.pl?/show/04/spf/nat1594.jpg

or maybe the 1933 5W Coupe:
http://www.carnut.com/cgi-bin/04/_image.pl?/show/04/spf/nat0987.jpg
Bear in mind these are both custom workovers so some detail is lost.
Look closely at your picture and you will see some unusual detail on the rear fender behind the wheel. That is not found on the Fords or Chevys. It is found on these Pontiac coupes. This is a 1933 in original appearance but without the 5th wheel but the rest of the body style seems to match, including the rear window. Yours appears to have the reflection of the 5th wheel on the trunk, but it could be something else and yours could be a regular coupe.

Hi folks,
The correct URL for the photo that began this thread is

I wish I knew more about cars from that era, too. That's a great "family" photo and it's definitely worth some attention. The dog is a nice part of this picture, IMO.

Have fun,
Steve

Nancy, looks like you got that right with the fender detail.
But I think it's a two door sedan (http://www.carnut.com/cgi-bin/02/image.pl?/show/02/spf/nat231.jpg).

Thanks to everybody. I was sure it was a Ford until I saw the rear fender detail pointed out by Nancy. Regardless of the make, my main Q is answered: this picture was probably taken no sooner than 1933 or '34.

The dog is a nice touch; too bad he's mostly cut off. When I first looked at the picture I thought the dog was simply chemical discoloration due to age.

The picture is in pretty darned good shape. Too bad it's so small: 2-3/4 x 4-1/2 I scanned at 600 and the digital image looks pretty good.

Thanks again for all the help on approximating a date.

I think you're right. The slope of the back end was not quite right for the coupe but can't see the whole backend in the picture. I was still sure it had to be some version of the Pontiac. I couldn't find a picture that showed the backend of the sedan.

My spouse (the car guy) concurs that it is a 1934 pontiac - flatback sedan possibly a straight eight.:) Sounds like more info than you needed.

Hi all, just joined. Great site. I look forward to getting to know all of you. I'm not sure but that car looks like a Packard. If I get a chance I'll email the pic to my friend who rebuilt a few of them. :)
