View Full Version : Greeting card question

First, hello to all. I am brand, spanking new to PSE, this group, and a new subscriber to the newsletter/website. I got Photoshop Elements 5 and Premiere Elements 3 for Christmas and got the Missing Manual and the Classroom in a Book to learn from. I just finished a lesson in CIAB on creating greeting cards and I also was looking at a tutorial on the same topic for PSE3 from Vol 3 Number 2 of the newsletter. Apparently, in PSE3, you could make 4-fold cards with something on the outside and a message on the inside. It seems that in PSE 5, we are limited to single page greeting cards. Is this correct? If so, is there a work around that would let me make opening cards?
Thanks.
Jim

Hi Jim
Welcome to the fourms.:)
You don't say if you have been lurking for a while or not, but if not, you will find there are typically a few ways to do things in Elements.
If I want to do a 4 fold card, I would just start with blank document 8 1/2 x 11 ..
then turn the grid on .. View>Grid (check is on)
go to edit>preferences>grid set it to 50 percent.. 1 division
and use that as a layout pattern for your card
Depending if you want upright or tent style will depend on where you put your image and where you put the upside down text (for the inside).
Hope this helps.:)

Thanks GaryK...yes, I have been lurking for a few weeks and the group here seems very friendly and helpful.
I see exactly what you are talking about to make my own 4-fold card template. That was a big help.
Thank you so much.

Welcome to the forum Jim. There is a great group here. I make my cards by printing the photo and using special stickies to paste to the single fold card stock. I find with PSE5 you can do anything you want with the photo and with text. I do a template for the card and type on the back the fact that it was designed and made by "Me". I just have the inside blank as I prefer to have a handwritten note. People have been wanting to buy my cards - so I guess my ideas are working. Just another thought. Have fun - but be prepared to give up something else to feed your addiction!!!

I will admit that I cheat - I do the pictures in PSE and add them to the package I have used for a few years - Greeting Card Factory - to lay them out with no thinking about what has to go in upside down!

Hello all, I'm brand new to this, any forum. I only found it today. I have a problem opening NEF files fron a Nikon D80 in PSE4 on my macbook. I know I have to get a plugin, now I do anyway! Can anyone run me through the process of opening said files? Thanks.

Hi Tim
Welcome to the forums,:)
I don't have a Nikon or a Mac. So I could be mistaken.
All you need to do once you get the latest Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) that works with your version of Elements (Adobe has just upgraded it so check version numbers) is go to File>open ..go the where the NEF is and it should open in the ACR.
Once yo have made any adjustments in there just go to open? in the lower right corner and it will move it to Elements.
Hope this helps.:)

When I first started using Elements, I did the "cheat" - where I designed here and then went to Greeting Card factory and pasted into their program. That is a really simple, no think way of doing it, however, I was determined to conquer Elements.
But instead, I usually do another "cheat." I do a "postcard" in Elements - cut it out with the fancy blade on my rotary cutter and paste it onto colored cardstock. Kind of a "scapbook" lite version. I do the same for the interior verse portion.
I have created single folds - totally in Elements - in all sizes - which I can now easily do - but right now, I prefer the colored cardstock option.
However, I am a huge fan of using the grid to accomplish things and I feel certain, with the instructions provided here - that I could make a quarter fold now.
One thing I am realizing - I am less and less dependent on Greeting Card Factory as I go forward with Elements.

I'll jump back on the card thread again.:D
My inkjet does duplex printing automatically, so now I just buy pre cut and creased cards and print on those.:)

Jim, North Carolina must have a different dialect from Virginia. My sister who lives in the Shenandoah Valley of VA says "y'all " is singular. The plural is
"all y'all". When I lived in central PA "way back when" the vernacular was "y'uns" Ah! American English.
Anyway welcome to the forum where the folks are friendly and the advice worthwhile.

Good Morning All!!
I am one of the new kids on the block - fairly new to PS4 - loving it and tearing my hair out at the same time (smile)! So very glad to have found this forum - just reading the question/answer on the greeting card topic and voila! I did it!! Nice to have found yall. I am a calligrapher in Charlotte, NC and knew I must learn PS4 for brochures and cards and wedding invitations, etc. I thank you all in advance for your patience...LOVE the program - just SO much to learn!!
All my best,
Rebecca Orr Campbell

Hi Quillabee...In thinkin' about it, all y'all sounds right to me as a plural. I think your sister is right. As a transplant from Delaware to NC, I am also very familiar with "y'uns" from up around Philly. :p
