View Full Version : Possible to Copy EXIF Data?

Is it possible to copy (as in copy and paste) the EXIF data or metadata of my images, from within Elements? I'm using version 3 but have 5 to install.

I'm given to understand that this is possible with some other editing programs. I want to include this data with some images for a project and certainly cutting and pasting would be preferrable to adding it item by item. (I know there are ways to read EXIF embedded in an image but that's not what I need)

If not Elements, is this possible from other Windows or Canon Camera Utilities I may have on my computer? What do I perhaps need to enable me to do this?

I'm hoping someone has actually done this sort of thing and can give me some direction. Barbara Brundage does not mention this one that I can see!

Ray - is your tech book out yet!!

Thanks...

I don't think there's any way to do it out of PSE, but Opanda Iexif will let you copy EXIF data to the clipboard. Downlaod at www.opanda.com .

The freeware version only seems to support JPG files - I don't know if there are other, more capable, versions. But that may be all you need, of course.

IrfanView, a freeware image viewer and batch processor, will display all the EXIF settings (after installing a plug-in from their website) and has a convenient Copy to Clipboard button. The program also facilitates batch naming, resizing, and a host of other functions. It's been my primary image viewer for years.

You can also do it from the File Info in Organizer - Press Alt-Prt Screen and Windows copies it to the clipboard. Then File>New>From Clipboard opens it in Elements as a new doc. Handy if you just want to paste it into the corner of an image. Only catch is that it's an image not text and if you want the complete EXIF info it may be more than a full screen. Here's what the Brief info looks like (PSE5):

676

Tony's method also works from within the Editor:

Open Image
File>File Info...>Camera Data 1
Alt-Print Screen
File>New>Image from ClipboardFor those of us who never venture over to the 'dark side'....

Good thought Chuck - you also get a bit more useful info that way (I get the Exposure Program and Metering Mode). Funny thing is that the ISO box can be copied and pasted as text but that's the only one that can

Tony, that's one reason I use IrfanView: the entire file comes over as text and can be pasted into Word, Excel, etc. Also, the list of items in the EXIF file is comprehensive, to say the least; I have no idea what many of the parameters mean! But, by golly, if I ever do figure them out, I know they're in there and can be extracted with IrfanView.

Thanks everyone... I'll download one of the extra programs.

Where do I find the metadata inside Elements 5 ?

Thanks

Pat: I don't think it's changed from previous versions. In Organizer it's Windows>Properties or Alt-Enter. In Editor it's File>File Info

Thanks Tony !!

I still have Version 5 on the shelf - I guess it's time to install. I've been dragging my feet because it means a clean-up job on my computer first, to make some room.

Another quick way to view the data is to simply right-click the thumbnail. If you are in Editor you can click the thumbnail(s) down in the Photo bin. Then you click File Info on the popup menu. You can do the same thing in Organizer, right-click the thumbnail.

For some reason, the EXIF data seems to be more complete when viewed from Organizer than from Editor.

I'm using ExifViewer (on my Mac) for that sort of things. Drag and drop images on the icon and voilą!

Ray, I have been looking for something like that. Where can I find ExifViewer?

Here's the link :

Then, inside the exif info (top), press Command - A and Command - C, in TextEdit (or your favourite text application), press Command - V to paste all, formatted text.

Ray to the rescue. I also use EXIFviewer and it does the job - views it.

On another note, what do people use to the EDIT the EXIF data such as the date the image was taken (as many of us use as a sort option in our organizers, etc.)?? There's a trick to strip the EXIF data from a photo (if memory serves, I think you copy the image in PSE/PS and then paste that as a new image in a new file and save - no EXIF goes with it. Why that would necessarily be done, I dont know...I'll leave that to the professionals to answer.).

Beatrice: not relevant for Macs but since you ask I was pleased to find that with the PSE5 Organizer and my new camera the date change in Organizer finally gets it right (it didn't always before). Now when I change the date time in Organizer it updates the Date Time Original in the EXIF data and the Date Picture Taken in Windows.

That's great news Tony! I had read somewhere that iPhoto (mac app) will allow users to change the picture taken date - and preserve it upon import. It does the first half (obviously changes it in date sort mode) but I havent had luck on the import end as others report (from what I've read).

Ray, I am very new to my Mac, so I hope that I explain this right. I am on a MacBookPro. I just downloaded the file. It is in my desktop file with a Readme Doc and a Camera Icon. The readme only tells me background info., not how to use. Nothing seems to happen when I click on the camera icon. Can you tell me where to go from here?
Thanks so much!

Debbie, sure.. just copy and paste the application (little camera) in your Applications folder, then double click to launch.

Next, drag and drop your images onto the icon in the Dock.

Beatrice : have you used Bridge for that? Comes with PSE4.

Ray, I tried that, but it will not open. There is an icon on the Dock, but it does nothing either. Any other ideas? I don't know if I am going to ever figure this Mac out! Thanks

Ray I decided to trash the first download and start over. Now it is working great!
Thanks anyway.

Yeah, it didnt work - shows as camera EXIF and wont edit. I can use the IPTC portion and edit a creation date though. I managed to change it somehow with Aperture by shifting time zones...that was a nightmare after figuring hour shifts. I ended up using the wrong file in my final DVD archive though. Oh well - it was only four pictures.
