Ok I have been making banners in PS Elements 5.0 and when I go to save them I almost always have the same problem. A box pops up on the screen and it says 'Could Not Complete Your Request Because Of A Program Error'. It doesn't always do this, but like I said most of the time it does. Does anyone know why it does this and how i can fix it.

Hi Jen

Sorry you are having troubles.

I have no idea what is going on but lets get a few things sorted out first.:)

What version of Elements are you using?
How big is the file..size (KB) size (pixels) any layers??
You are using "save as" correct?
Have you tried other formats than Jpeg?
Is it a creation or started as something else does it happen with all saves or just these banners?

None or all of this may matter, but at least we might be able to find a common thread in your saving woes.

version: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0
size: normally 450x150 px
layers: yes but I flatten them before saving
using save as correct: I think so...
tried any other formats: yes, since this is happening I still want to save the stuff I make so i save it as PSD file( sometimes if i save it as this and then close my program and reopen it and try saving it as a jpg again... it works)
creation?: I think so....
Does it happen with everything else: yes

Ok I hope this gives you a couple clues as to what it might be.

Jen

Sorry, I wasn't asking if you were using save as correctly it was more of a statement.
So it only seems to be when you save as a jpeg that you have this problem... correct???:D

You are choosing jpeg and not jpeg2000?

I know these are pretty basic things but just need to make sure.

*Edit*

Oh shoot

Before we go too much further. Have you tried resetting your prefs.

Hold down Cntrl-Alt-Shift just as you click on the program to start.
At the popup choose yes.

ok when i did that it says "delete the adobe photoshop elements settings file? Yes or No...

is this when I click yes?

yes that is the yes. :)

I'm not sure if the file saving routine is somehow linked to that, but doing this seems to fix quite a few strange problems with elements.

ok thanks... it seems to be working now, so if I ever have this problem again should I just do that again? :)

Hi Jen ...

Yes ...

Elements is quite prone to the preferences file becoming corrupt ... when it does you get all sorts of strange things happen.

Control Alt Shift (Mac Command Option Shift) makes Elements build a fresh preference file and it often sorts out the problem :)

I was having a similar problem last week trying to save jpegs. It would save them, but when I went to open it was "unrecognized format". I was able to open them with ACDsee and then resave as jpegs so I didn't loose them, but boy was it annoying. Finally did a rebuild and for whatever reason that corrected the problem (at least so far). Hope it works for you!
