i have a newbie question, if this has been covered already i apologize
question is if i am working on a project and want to quit and pick it up again later would i save this a a psd file so i would be right back were i left off? or is there another way to save on going projects?

Yes, you definitely want to save as a psd file. Be sure to save the layers!

definitely - that's the beauty of the PSD format - it's lossless, so you can open and save it as often as you like without file degradation (like you'd get with a jpg), and all your layers will be saved just as you left it -

The only part NOT saved will be your History - so you can't close a file, then open it later and hope to <Ctrl>+<Z> backwards a few steps -
