It needs some refinement I think, but here's a quick one of Oliver using Dave's technique. Thank you Dave for another great video.

HERE (http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/gallery/view_img.php?id=15539) is the technique applied to an image I already had in my gallery. I've left the "before" version in there, too.

Here's my try. Mine didn't come out as well. I used a picture I took of my son's dog. http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1BiDbjY7fUWZ6MYzeEUmCDfrQdTQZu

Well, I tried this on a photo of:
1. a person-bleechh
2. a horse-double bleechh
3. a door-hooray!
The problem was, that the end result looked too much lke the original pictures...for some reason it took nicely to the door...

I did use Dave's suggestion about blend modes-duped and used color dodge and lowered the opacity to about 50%.
Thanks Dave, this one I'll have to play with some more...;)

That is really a fun how-to video. I have been sitting on a picture of a Christmas tree ornament for a week now -- not sure what, if anything, to do with it.
This technique produced interesting results :)

Anna, the dog is a Yorkshire Terrier. I am dog-sitting for my son and have fallen in love with the dog. Most small dogs I've seen are hyper and yippy, but this one’s not. He is the sweetest little dog and minds well.

I already posted this on one of the other threads about Dave's Tutorial (there are multiple ones going). I took this guy's picture while at the zoo. After working on it with Dave's suggestions, I also added one of Jodi's tints, and one of her frames. I love his expression.

Thanks, Brenda! Miss Maggie is mine, and it was so much fun to paint her! But she's not a collie...she's a HUGE Sheltie! 51 pounds! We call her our "borderline collie". I think you'll enjoy this painting technique.

I tried the the video. I don't think mine turned out as well as I'd hoped it would. My Sammy is a Sheltie also. I tried the pixentral thing I couldn't get it to work right. /show.php?picture=1c<a href="http://www.pixentral.coma1uh9pTSf2bQXBW8xvfsC8HGRqs"/><img alt="Picture hosted by Pixentral" src="http://www.pixentral.com/hosted/1ca1uh9pTSf2bQXBW8xvfsC8HGRqs_thumb.jpg" border="0"/></a>

Well I put it in my gallery but it doesn't show it very well since it's so small. I'm not good at this thing. Very frustrating!!!!!!!

Good morning, Brenda. Sammy looks like a real cutie! But you're right, the image is a bit small to be able to see the painting effect. Maybe someone else will come along to advise you on how to make it bigger...I'm not very good at this resizing stuff either. :o

Hi ...
Here is how I resize images for Pixentral and for my Gallery here:
Resize using Save for Web:
Open your image then do File>Save for Web
When the Save for Web dialogue box come up there is a section over on the bottom right hand side where you can change the pixels size (see A) if you tick Constrain Proportions then you only need to change the longest side then just click on Apply. Next take a look at the new size (B) ... if it is still too big then use the quality slider (C) until the size is OK
http://www.pixentral.com/hosted/1oU339hS3qhxM5k9hXDdeC21dpFM0_thumb.jpg (http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1oU339hS3qhxM5k9hXDdeC21dpFM0)
For Pixentral I use 750 for the longest side and around 150k for the filesize.
For my Gallery here I use 700 for the longest side make sure that the filesize is below 300K.
To post an image on Pixentral just go to the site and follow the intructions then copy the URL from below the image (the one marked Forum) and past it into a message here. You do need to make sure that you copy all of the URL as some of it is not showing onscreen ... so click just before the first bracket of the URL hold down the mouse button and drag the highlighting to the end of the line.

Wendy and Julie: Thanks for the kind words. When I scanned that slide and did the few things to it, I thought it was a good candidate for the painting tut.
My wife just loves otters. I think they are wonderful to watch. Watching them makes me think that they have a wonderful life.
I just started another project: scanning all my slides [thousands of them] and doing a few Elements things to each one. Needless to say, this will be a long project.

Russ,
Just out of curiosity, what kind of scanner did you decide to use? I want to embark on the same project (3 thousand or so slides - mostly Kodachrome). My head is swimming from all the research in attempting to pick a film scanner to buy.

This is a bit embracing, but I'll tell it anyway. Maybe someone will read what I did/didn't do and learn from my mistake.
I used to shoot everything with slide film and a Nikon camera. I did that for many years and ended up with thousands of slides.
A few years ago I decided to scan them all before they deteriorated more than they already had. Naturally, just as I was able to complete that project, my hard drive crashed and I lost all my work [no backup].
It's a few years later now, I've cooled down, I'm starting that project over again. This time I will back up my work.
Now to your question, I have an Epson Perfection 2400 Photo Slide scanner. It's several years old but does a good job.
Russ

Thanks Russ, your luck sounds like mine. Good luck on your scanning process. I had scanned 2000 pictures into my hard drive that consisted of slides and old photos. Some of the photos were so old they were stamped on a thin piece of tin, so I had to be real careful because they had started chipping off the tin. I didn't have a backup at the time. I called a "computer expert" to add memory to my computer, and he mistakenly erased everything on my hard drive. He was able to save about 300 pictures, but they were all mixed in together and it took me forever to rename and sort them into directories.

I tried the painting video on a different photo. I posted it into my gallery. I don't know how to put it into my post like Russ did. If anyone has an easy explanation on how to do that I'd appreciate it. I think I'd like it better if it was a little more painterly. That's Rudy a pet of ours. Brenda
Oh and Wendy, used your directions to resize and post in gallery, no problems. Thank you. I think maybe part of my problem with the Sammy image was that I cropped it, for whatever reason that may have been an issue. Thanks Again.

Brenda, your paintings of Rudy are beautiful! How did you end up with such an unusual pet?
Russinator
January 3rd, 2007, 11:52 AM
BrendaC: It's really easy to do.
First you need a free account with PhotoBucket http://s140.photobucket.com/ (http://s140.photobucket.com/)
Here's the way I do it: I resize my pictures making the width 888. You might want a different size? I haven't received any complaints with that size.
Then I save that small picture to my desktop, go to PhotoBucket, find the picture, download it, copy the link to that picture to my clipboard.
Then I paste the link in the elements thread. If the instructions sound difficult, they're not.
If you need better instructions, let me know.

Help! My try at painting effect isn't working right. Below is my picture. After using the accented edges my picture doesn't hardly change (my settings are about 9-26-5). When I then go to dry brush (and I don't show that effect taking place) it hardly changes again. Another thing is the list below with my layers seems wrong - I thought there should be from top accented edges, then dry brush...but it seems the dry brush is taking the place of accented edges. I don't see both. What is happening here?
http://www.pixentral.com/hosted/1goqjV8wEqb7bFrBZuLxwAA4CYk6G_thumb.jpg (http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1goqjV8wEqb7bFrBZuLxwAA4CYk6G)

Norma, I got tripped up by that, too. After setting your accented edges filter click on the new filter button on the bottom by the trash can. That will seem to make another accented edges filter, but as soon as you choose the dry brush from the list you'll have the dry brush above the accented edges. Does that make sense...these things are hard to describe. Continue "stacking" your filters and playing with the settings until you get the look you like.

Thanks Janet! I forgot that step.
Well, I tried again and I don't see it looking good. Maybe the subject is too much the same color? My steps were:
1. Accented edges (and mine setting are up there at 9-26-5)
2. New filter
3. Dry Brush (again, my settings are way up there 9-9-3)
4. Texturizer (that works fine)
But here's my picture. I don't like it and it doesn't look like a painted picture.

Norma, I don't know what size file you're working on, but if it's very large, the effects don't affect it as much, so will need to be moved to a higher setting (or resize your picture first).

Norma, on my Shelties I tried putting a watercolor filter after the dry brush. Also, after I had applied all the filters I tried going back to the first one and changing the settings again, then the second one, etc.

Here's my 3rd try as you were replying to my last note. I'll have to try the watercolor filter. I did have to go back and edit my settings though. I'm still not satisfied with them but at least it looks something like a painting now, where it didn't before. Thanks for the help.

That's the original photo with just the filters. I don't know enough about "shopping" yet to do anything sneaky. It's a combination of accented edges, dry brush and watercolor, I think. I didn't write it down.:o
