I have some icons from Flaming Pear. Does anyone know where to find more desktop icons. Is there a way to create them in Elements?
Thanks

Kimi, if you google "desktop icons" you'll come up with all kinds of websites where you can download.
Don't have an answer about doing them in PE though. Maybe someone else can answer that one!
Good luck with "googling" though.

I tried to open an icon file with PE5 and it couldn't figure out the file type. I use special software written specifically for creating Icons to create mine.

...Is there a way to create them in Elements?...Kimi,
Just create an image 48x48, 32x32, or 16x16 px, and save it as a BMP. Then, in Windows, change the file extension from .BMP to .ICO and you're set.

Byron I understand the first part.:)
Can you explain a little more about the "in Windows part?
Like the how and where? :o

...explain a little more about the "in Windows part?...Kimi,
OK... so you make an image, and save it as "myicon.bmp". You then need to change the file name to "myicon.ico".
Do you ordinarily see the extension after the file name when you view your files with Windows Explorer? I know that it is possible to have Windows hide the extension, and that might be something you will have to work past if you want to do this.

Byron, when you rename it xxxx.ICO is there a particular folder on the C:-drive where it should reside?

An icon can reside anywhere on a drive, you just have to assign it to an executable program. For example, if you want to change an icon for an existing program on your desktop, right-click on the icon and select properties. On the middle tab labeled shortcut there is a button labeled change icon. Click on that and browse to where your new icon resides, select it, click on open, then ok.

Mark's advice is correct, of course! It might make sense to create a folder for your custom icons, somewhere, for logic and neatness.

Somewhat OT but I found this article on the creation of fancy XP icon creation interesting. Seems like a lot of work just to make a little picture :)

Thanks for 'location advice". I will add one comment for anybody that may have difficulty changing the file extension. It's not necessary.
The 'change icon routine' will, by default try to find .ICO files. But, if you click the drop-down menu and select "all files", you can then navigate right to your .BMP file.
It worked OK for me (Windows XP)
