View Full Version : What happened!!!

I got a new 1G Lexar high speed card for Christmas with my camera. On the card was Paint Shop Pro 9 software. I downloaded this software. Today I was backing up more of my photos and I notice that a lot of them show the icon for Paint Shop Pro 9 and of course when I click it takes me there. Is there a way I can default to PSE5. There are some things in the software I might use but my preference is PSE5. I really don't know why this happened - but I bet one of you out there does!!! Thanks.

I'm just thinking - they probably set it up that way to get you to use PSP9 and upgrade to 11. Not fair to people like me that don't understand what is going on.

Happens all the time when you try out new programs (most recently CS3 did it to me). Just right click on the file, then Open With, Choose Program, pick Elements 5 from the list and check the box that says Always use selected program. It's just one of the hazards of adding new programs I'm afraid. They will always try and take over :(

Tony, thank you sooo much. Did it and all is fine. I just realized that without this forum I would have struggled with that for hours and who knows if I would even have found the answer. Your quick reply saves me, and probably my husband, a lot of headaches. Thanks.

PS Not ready to tackle the e-mail thing yet. Maybe next week when I am back on track I can pick your brain as to what might be going wrong!

Thanks for asking that question and the answer.
I've been struggling with that for a while. I'l try that later.

Hi ...
Just another point you do have to do that for each file type ... jpg, psd, png etc :)

Wendy: Thanks for that clarification. Another point is that you can pick and choose the program to associate with the file type - I personally prefer to have my JPG files open with Windows Picture and Fax viewer - that way when I click on an JPG image in an email for example it just opens a viewer - not an editing program. The viewer will then let you go to an editing program if you want.
To be fair many programs are polite enough to ask you if you want to associate particular file types with their program but some just assume it or bury the question somewhere where it's easy to miss during installation.

I find it very annoying. I am having to change each photo I have imported individually to PSE from Paint Shop Pro. Even when I click on a photo it says type: Paint Shop Pro after I have changed it to PSE5. When I right click on any photo it says Browse with Paint Shop Pro first on the list. I know I can change but this Paint Shop seems to have taken over my PSE5. I will check into it when I have time and maybe I will uninstall it. I was thinking there might be some painting effects that I can't get in PSE5 but I haven't heard an answer to that question yet. I just keep learning. Between new cameras, upgrades on Pro-Show Gold and some new programmes the days are flying. But - this is my hobby and it is fun!!

Shari,
Try this:
Open your Control Panel and go to Folder Options.
Click on the File Types tab.
Scroll down to find JPEG (or other picture file types) and then click on Change under the Details for 'JPEG' extension. This will give you an Open With box that has a list of programs to choose from. If you want all JPEGs to open with PSE, then choose it and click Okay.
Remember that you'll have to do this for each file type, but should only have to do it ONCE by using this method.
Like Tony, I have set the Windows Picture and Fax viewer as the default because of the time it takes for PSE to open.
Hope this helps!

Thanks Kim - I will try that in a few minutes. I just went to post to Pixentral and notice ALL my icons show as PaintPro9. Can you please tell me how you set the window viewer as default. Most of the photos I get show up at the bottom of the e-mail and then I put them into PSE5 if I want to work with them. I get a little mixed up with all this stuff but I am learning. Thanks again.

OK Kim I did that. What really ticks me off is every photo I right click on says Type: Paint Shop Pro even if I have changed it to PSE. I wanted to write them and tell them how annoyed I am but of course there is nodirect way of getting through except for phoning and that will go nowhere. It is just a gimmick because they want me to use Paint Shop and get to like it and then order an upgrade. My programme is PSE and if I am ordering any upgrades it will be for PSE. Sorry - I had to vent a bit but thanks very much for your help.

Have you tried changing them inside of PSE5?
Go to Edit/File association... , then check the file types you want PSE to open and click OK. Maybe that will help.

Reka - I did that and now I just got some photos via e-mail from someone I have received photos from often. They will not open. When PSE5 opens it says that the photos are damaged or not a format to be opened in PSE5 - so I went back to File Association and changed it back to the default and nothing has changed. I cannot get up my friends photos no matter what I do. Can anyone help please!!!

Gee, I didn't know that would happen. Which file type are they? Can you view the thumbnail in the Windows Explorer? Have you tried opening them with another program like IrfanView?
Have you associated them with another program in Windows? That is probably why. You have told PSE not to open them, but not told Windows which other program should do it. Follow Tony's advice from Post #2, picking another program such as IrfanView or Windows Fax Viewer:
"Happens all the time when you try out new programs (most recently CS3 did it to me). Just right click on the file, then Open With, Choose Program, pick Elements 5 from the list and check the box that says Always use selected program."

Shari: It does sound like you may have only done a temporary file association. When you "Choose Program" you should get a screen that looks like this - as I mentioned I use the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer as I find it more convenient for quick viewing:
