I have an image that has four images of different widths. Each image is on a different layer. I want to crop one of the layers to be narrower. When I use the crop tool it crops the entire image with the four layers. How to crop just one layer?

Merrill,

Work on just the layer you wish to make narrower. Use the Rectangular Marquee tool to defing the area you with to keep. Press CTRL-SHIFT-I to invert the selection. Press Delete.

Thanks for the reply, yes that works but I guess I don't understand why.
Now I am trying to move a layer which was moved into the image to begin with and yet the move tool wants to move the whole image and not the layer.

Shouldn't I be able to do anything I want to a layer without it affecting the other layers?

Merrill,

When you activate the Move tool, look at the Options bar. You will see an option to Auto Select Layer.

This might be giving you trouble, especially if you are not expecting it to work the way it does. Try turning it off to see if things work better for you.

That was the problem. WOW! Never saw that box, even if I did I wouldn't have known what it was for. Boy, what a good thing I learned today. Thanks.
