View Full Version : Restoring small thumbnails in the organiser only from DVD

Hi
Had some problems recently with Elements and had to reinstall the program and wipe all my tags etc.

Have all my photographs backed up on DVD.

I would like to restore the photographs just to have them as small thumbnails with tags from the DVD, without saving each proper large version of each photgraph to my hard disk, so that the CD logo comes up beside each photogrpah within the organiser.

Anybody know how to do this?

Hi... welcome to the forums :)

What you need to do is reload all of the images back onto your PC and in Organizer to recreate the Catalog.

Then use the Copy / Move option under Backup to move the files onto dvd. If you select the option when prompted to remove the files from your hard drive, PSE3 will replace them with a low resolution thumbnail.

Hope this helps..

Thanks. Hoped I could get away without having to reload them!

Neil,

Yes... it would have been easier not to reload them, but Copy / Move is a different Backup routine where you tell Organizer that the photos are now physically stored offline.

Based on this comment, I conclude that the pictures on the DVD were not currently in the .psa catalog.

Therefore it seems to me that it would be possible to do a Get Photos from the DVD and check the box for Keep OFFLINE.

This will make something called proxies (smallish - size controlled in preferences before you bring the photos in - not after), will show the disc icon and reference the DVD for the full photo file.

Be aware that editing a photo makes it online (no longer offline).

That is useful to know... :)
