View Full Version : Elements 2.0 won't run on XP computer

Yeah, I'm in the dark ages. My kid wanted Photoshop for Christmas and my aunt found an older version (Elements 2.0) for cheap (brand new, still sealed, just older).

I installed it fine, but when I try to run it, it goes through the plug-in list, VERY slowly, and sometimes hangs there and ALWAYS hangs when it gets to "Initializing".

Uninstalled and reinstalled once but I've about had it with electronics today...

Her computer is an AMD Athlon XP 2200+ processor, 1.81 GHz, 224 MB RAM, running Windows XP Home SP 1 (I've never connected hers to the Internet, as it would be dialup and my bill and she mostly plays games on it).

So...would the fact that the computer isn't online cause problems? Do I really just need to seriously clean it up?? Other possibilities?

Any help appreciated...I'm 1 for 3 today having failed to properly install the DVD player I got for the same computer but at least managed to install the software and copy some tunes to the MP3 player her dad got her. ARG - I live on the computer but today was a bit much...

Cheers,
Lelani

Hi Lelani and welcome to the forum. I use to have Elements 2 that came with my camera and I had the same problem as you are having. I called Adobe and was told it would not work with Windows XP. I couple of months ago I got another copy with my Wacom and was told by several on this forum that they have been running v2 on XP with no problems. I have v3 and v5 now.

Hang tight and hopefully one of the others that can run v2 on XP will come along and can help you out better. My thinking is that two versions of it were put out.

Again, welcome to the forum.

Hi Lelani ...

... and welcome to the forum :)

Being a Mac user I can't help on this one but I am sure that someone will be along soon who will be able to help you ...

Hi!

PSE2 worked fine for me on XP, but try this:

Right click on the link to the program, either in the start menu or quick launch bar. Click on Properties, then on the last tab - Compatibility? (I have a German XP version). Put a check in the first box and choose Windows 98/ME from the dropdown box. Close the dialog box with OK and try the program again. That might work.

Let us know if it does work! It might be important to someone else too if it does.

Good luck!

I use Elements 2. My PC is XP2...all up to date:)
I would suggest that your problem is the memory of only 256MB RAM or there abouts. 512 is about the minimum required although I have 1024 which runs it perfectly.:)
I have introduced a couple of friends to Elements 2 (Free copies bundled with scanners etc.) and all are OK with 512 MB RAM:)

I've been running Elements 2 under Windows XP on my current PC, my previous PC and my laptop. On all three it just worked without having to "tweak" anything. The laptop only has 256mb of memory.

Given that Elements 2 was released after Windows XP was out, I doubt there are any compatibility problems so I think the problem lies elsewhere.

I'd suggest having a clean-up of the PC as a first step - http://ccleaner.com/

On second thoughts I agree that the PC probably needs a good tidy up:)

One other thought: try uninstalling the program, then re-installing with your virus scan program turned off during the installation. Norton is known to play 'not nice' with Adobe products, and the latest version of McAfee has developed similar anti-social behavior.

Hi Lelani!

I use a laptop with XP Service pack 2, 256MB ram and have no problems at all with Elements 2.

The advice to clean up the PC is hopefully going to help, Would also suggest defragmenting the hard disk drive as well.

I originally installed my copy while still using Service Pack 1A so not having SP2 shouldn't be a problem.
