A friend of my wife brought a picture to be fixed. it has an orange cast, I tried adjusting individual colors (less red and green, more blue) in the same amount. I understand the problem is the existing light and that you can't fix some pictures. But, is there any suggestion I will try it. I'm using PSE 5.

Thanks,

Fernan

Fernan:

If there's an area of the picture that should be white, you could try to use Enhance>Adjust Color>Remove Color Cast. It will also work with middle gray and black tones, but I find it works best with white.

You can also do it with a Levels Adjustment Layer, adjusting each of the red, green, and blue channels individually. That's a little trickier, but when you're using an adjustment layer, you can adjust and readjust without affecting the original image.

If the Orange Cast if from the available light source you could try going to: Filter> Adjustments> Photo Filter. Click down arrow, Choose one of the Cooling Filters, Then try moving the Density slider.

Doug thanks for the great tip. I have some wedding photos taken at a courthouse I have been working on and this works like a charm getting the yellow and orange cast out of the photos.

Fernan, thanks for the questions. I hope it works for you as well as it did for me. I had been doing the photos the way you were and was not happy with the results on many of them.

Doug, I will have to remember that! I have always used the Enhance>ajust color>remove color cast. That seems to work, but sometimes, you do need to click around a little.....sometimes clicking on one white would make the grass way too green and then if I reset and tried clicking on some other white it would be perfect. So, it's not an exact science, you may need to try and play a bit, Fernan.

Thanks Chuck, remove color cast did not work. Using levels adjustment layer did the trick. The phot is much better, but you can't do much since the quality of the phot is not that great.

Thanks Doug, I used them but did not work as good as adjusting one color channel at a time. The photo quality is quite bad.

Fernan, glad to hear that levels adjustment layer worked the problem for you. I, too, have had difficulty getting the Remove Color Cast tool to work reliably. It's worth a try, but it's nice to have a suite of tools you can use to work the problem.
