I uninstalled some unwanted fonts - a lot of them. Then I got a message on the computer "Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognizable versions. Insert Windows XP CD Rom"
We dont have the CD - the computer came with XP installed.
I rebooted and things look normal. Though I cant bring in the Elf face website.
When I go to Windows there are 95 "$NtUninstall"
What have I done? And is there anything I should do to get out of this? I am almost banned from using the computer!!
Please someone help me Jean

Hey, Went to get my husband to help for this one...

Try to do a system restore, first. Go to Start>Help & Support and find the line for System Restore. Pick a restore point prior to the time you deleted the fonts, then follow the instructions.

That should restore your computer to they way it was prior to the deletion.

Just a note, Several fonts are called on by Windows, and if it can't find them you'll get this error. Unfortunately, most new computers with XP already installed do not have the disks, or a set of disks comes with the computer that puts it at the same status as it was when you bought it (yuck!!).

Try Restore first, then let's see what happens.

Let us know.

Many thanks. As soon as my husband comes in he can try that. Believe me, I am not touching anything.
How can one delete some fonts if you dont know which ones Windows needs. I would like to install some new ones, and there were so many I dont like on the computer already. Will let you know how the system restore works. Jean

Jean,if you get a copy of the win XP font folder you could compare & see what files you deleted,Then replace them.

Hello Jean,
all those "$NtUninstall" are uninstallers for Windows Updates - the First Tuesday things that Microsoft sends out. They're not related to your font problems and should be ignored. (Uninstalling Windows Updates is a subject for another forum, altogether.)

I'd love to know where to find a list of required system files. I'd delete a whole lot of stuff I'm never going to use, especially fonts for languages I've never heard.

I strongly agree with the "System Restore" gang. If you open your Start Menu, choose "Accessories", then "System Tools", you'll find System Restore near the bottom of the list.

The answer's out there somewhere, the trick is in finding it.

Get a list of standard windows default fonts here:
http://www.kayskreations.net/fonts/fonttb.html

Since MS doesn't offer file downloads for them the only solution is to either get them from another XP system's font folder or extract them from an install CD.

Thanks, Bob, that's just what I was looking for. I hope that the OP can make good use of it.

Have fun,
Steve:)

Jean, how did you uninstall them? If you simply deleted them from the Windows/Fonts folder, they went to your Recycle Bin. To get them back, you can open your recycle bin, look for the fonts Windows requires on the link Bob posted, then restore them.

Ditto to what Diana said. Look in your recycle bin and restore the missing fonts - all of them. Windows is looking for them during boot up and since its not finding them where it expects to, you are getting the error message you are seeing. Once you've restored them, if you still want to get rid of them, delete them by going through Start -> Control Panel -> Fonts and delete them from there by right clicking and selecting delete in the menu that pops up. That way they will also be removed from Windows trying to load them during startup and you won't see the error message any more. :D Leave the "$NtUninstall" folders alone. Windows needs them when you really want to uninstall a program.

Sorry I didnt get back to you all, but was not notified of replies. Steve - so glad to know all those Uninstalled were not of my doing.
My husband did a Restore, and I dont get any error messages now. The fonts I did not want have gone - along with some I had to reinstall as they were after the date of the restore.
I can make a computer hum, but dont know why it does that.
Many thanks to all. Jean
