I'll post this week's theme a bit early and with some explanation as it may take some thought. First ... thanks to Steven for the suggestion. I think we'll all have fun with it and it is perfect for a 'reminiscing' time of year.

The theme is "Then and now", and one way to represent it would be by comparing a photo taken at an earlier point in time with one taken this week. Some ideas would be your home years ago and your home today. Your family's first holiday gathering compared to this year's. A sapling you planted in the yard years ago compared to the tree today. You get the idea.

As a poor example I've used my first car in a collage with my current car as one idea, and a meal before it was prepared compared to after it was prepared as another idea.

Hope you find this as much fun as I think you will. Best wishes to everyone for a peaceful and happy holiday.

Bill

The fine print:
Because the purpose of the weekly theme is to get us more familiar with our cameras and to sharpen our photographic skills, entries should be taken during the week of the theme.
Photoshopping is allowed.
To make this thread more manageable to view, please post only your entries in this thread. Post your comments in the accompanying 'comment' thread.
Be creative and have fun!

I'll start, and hopefully Gary will finish. Good timing on this topic for I just got a film scanner yesterday. I got some old shots of the front of the house to show what it looked like the past 50 years. We did a rather extensive exterior update last year. Too bad the garden looks sad today but we have had a rough late fall here.

A very timely challenge as I was working on a then and now project for some of the local buildings. It had stalled due to poor weather but the sun came out today so I slipped out and grabbed another one. The then is not mine (it was taken in 1920) and is of what was, back in the 1890's, the largest hardware store west of Toronto. By 1920 it was in decline and the store front had been taken over by a car dealership as shown in the 1920 picture. Times change and it's now Godfather's Pizza  - the facade is currently being restored but if you look close you can still see some of the original signage.

Amazingly VanTuyl & Fairbank still exists (it was founded in 1865) but is now relegated to a wooden building at the back (which you can see in the 1920 picture). Still owned and run by Charles Fairbank II it's just the place for finding spare parts for old equipment. I included a picture of the current store which I believe is now the oldest hardware store in Canada having been in operation for 141 years.

Here's a friend's corgi - the puppy photo is a favorite. I'm going to put my corgi makeover in my gallery.

I went the (edible) instant gratification route.

I almost forgot about this one. I found an old photo album a couple years ago and was intrigued by the largest photo in the book, a potato chip and horseradish factory in a cool art deco building from 1932. I figured it was in Portland or Vancouver Wa. based on the captions in the book but wasn't 100%. Enter our leader, Bill. I sent him a copy of the photo in August and he did some amazing detective work. Through the Oregon Historical Society, reverse directories and some plain old foot stomping he found the building in Portland still intact and the current home of some investment outfit. I thought it was great work on his part. The black and white pictures are from my album (including "The Chip King") followed by Bill's color updates.

One more :) . Rather dreary day for photography but happened to be passing the Canadian end of the St Clair River railroad tunnel and remembered I had a copy of an 1890's postcard view of the original tunnel - which is still there but unused.

The St. Clair River Tunnel was the first full-size submarine tunnel built in North America and connected Canada with the US. The tunnel was completed in 1890 and operated for over 100 years however the bore diameter could not handle larger freight cars and a new tunnel was opened in 1994. Needless to say the new one took longer to build than the original which was basically dug by hand. The original picture dates back to 1890 shortly after it opened - the new one shows the old and new tunnels from the closest spot I could get to the original picture without getting arrested. BTW I used to work in the building on top - the new one not the old one :)
