When you use the text styles the emboss and inner glow "T" is a sort of gold colour that I do not like. Is there a way to change this base colour? I see where to change the colour of the bevel, glow or shadow. I have looked in Barbara Brundages book and cannot find the answer. Is it something simple I have missed or do these functions always have to be in this gold colour? Thank you anyone.

Basically, make a selection of the object, stroke it on a separate layer, and apply Gaussian blur on this layer to feather it.
Have a look at this video I made for you :

Hi, Shari -
Some layer styles are also dependent on the original color of the text itself - try a different text color to change the color blends -

Shari: I know what you mean about that Text Emboss effect in PSE5. There's no easy way to change the colour without simplifying the layer that I've found. If you want a different colour it's better better to type the text in the colour you want and then apply a regular layer style like bevel - simple emboss and then double click on the layer style icon and add a drop shadow, inner glow and stroke. You finish up with the same effect but with the colours that you choose not what they chose.

PS Hope you are surviving OK in Vancouver. Saw the pictures of Stanley Park yesterday. Wow! That's going to take a while to clean up.

Upon further investigation that Text Emboss effect in PSE5 is an action that applies a layer style that includes a colour overlay (Gold). But Color Overlay is one of the things that they don't let you edit in the layer styles in PSE5 so you're kind of stuck with it unless anyone who knows more than me knows how to defeat it. Can't quite understand why Adobe would have done that unless they've been reading the Gold Text thread :D

PS - This bugged me so I did find a way - select the text, add a hue/saturation adjustment layer, link it with the text layer, then adjust the hue/saturation layer to the colour of your choice. Then if you move the text, the mask on the hue/saturation will move too (but don't try editing the text or you'll have to reselect and redo the HS layer). You'll also have to change the stroke colour in the layer style settings unless you want stay wioth gold.
A messy workaround and not to be recommended - it's a lot easier to make your own layer style as per the suggestion above.

Thanks Tony - that is what I wanted. It is strange that Adobe did that. I will print your first method and use it when I get time. Yes, we have been affected by the storms. Lost so many neighbourhood trees - huge Pines, Fir and Cedars uprooted - but the saddest is one of our streets that for about eight blocks was lined with cherry trees that were incredible when in bloom. Many of them have been uprooted. We are being warned now about another storm moving in and everyone is trying to get done what they must before the power outages. Lots of damage and inconvenience but no lives lost - which is the most important. Makes one realize how spoilt we are with all the conveniences we have. I have to get on with my Christmas projects in case the power goes out again. Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

I was just looking through some e-mails and realize that I did not thank you for making that video on outlining text or shapes. I had sooo much going on at the time I wrote that post. Everyone loved their gifts but I am going to bookmark your video. In the middle of summer I can listen to "Blue Christmas". Thanks again for taking the time. I am sure others appreciated it as well.
