View Full Version : Camera RAW in PS Elements 5.0?

I gather from reading the help files in PSE 5.0 that the program is supposed to work with Camera RAW files, but when I try to import them, I'm getting

"The items listed were not imported... the file is damaged or is a format that cannot be included in the Organizer..."

I am working with NEF files from a Nikon D100 and also a Nikon D80.

I'm not surprised the D80 files won't load... that's a very new camera. But I'm surprised the D100 files won't load into PSE Organizer.

So, is there a latest RAW file plug-in that I need to obtain, and if so, a) where do I get it and b) where do I put it in order to view RAW files in PSE 5 ?

Thanks,

The D100 should work in 3.5 that came with PSE5. For the D80 you need 3.6 that you can get from:

Not being a Nikon user I haven't paid too much attention to problems with Nikon RAW but I'm sure I've seen posts suggesting that this is some sort of conflict between Nikons own RAW processor and Elements ACR.

Might be worth considering uninstalling the Nikon Raw ( or buy a Canon :) )

Hi ...

Yes I remember reading it too ... if you have both installed then the Nikon one takes over from Elements ... so you need to uninstall it :)

Wendy...perhaps I have a similar problem??? I recently bought a Canon S 3 IS only to realize that it wouldn't shoot RAW (salesman thought it would)...so I returned it. Now, I have 14 days to try an Olympus SP 150 UZ, which does...though some of the reviews aren't so good. Anyway, the photos will transfer from the card to the Olympus software but they are ORF and won't open in PSE5. The only Canon cameras that shoot raw are SLR's and I didn't want to go there! Any help and advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

LFD, is that a 150 UZ or a 510 UZ? If the latter, the Adobe Camera Raw plug-in version 3.6 will process the raw images.

Chuck...
My error...thanks for responding. I meant 510! Guess I have been reading too many reviews...doesn't take much to confuse me these days! I just went to Adobe and downloaded the update but not sure whether it should be placed in the plug in folder or the file format folder. I may be in need of more help...will let you know! If you have any camera suggestions I would love to hear them. Color noise is a problem...but also had that with Canon
S3 that I tried...not so mad with lower ISO settings.

Thanks...LFD

LFD:

The file (cameraraw.8BI) goes in:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 5.0\Plug-Ins\File Formats

replacing the one that's in there by default.

Close PSE5 before installing, then re-open; your raw images should work then.

LFD, I share your pain around Canon's decision to restrict RAW to their DSLR's. My first camera was a Canon G2, which had RAW. The most recent in this series - the G7 - doesn't have RAW, an unfortunate decision on Canon's part. You might try to Google 'digital cameras with raw mode' and see if there are other non-Canon cameras that have the functionality.

The update worked...have it in the Plug In and File Format Folders...not exactly sure where it SHOULD be. Thanks for your help. I guess I should start another thread concerning non SLR's cameras that shoot quality, low noise photos that support raw. There probably aren't any that measure up to higher standards. If I weren't a retired senior I might be interested in an SLR but just don't want to get into all the lenses and weight of the cameras! Guess you can't have the better of both worlds!

Thank...LFD:)

Chuck,

I didn't realize the G7 excluded RAW. In fact, I always thought they discontinued the G-series after #6.

I have a G5, with RAW, and I'm so glad I kept it. I love this camera ALMOST as much as the 30D.

I sometimes lamented that I should have upgraded it because it was so good - now I'm really glad I didn't after hearing about the absence of RAW.

Pat, I agree. I still love my G2, although it only does 4 megapixels and has a 3:1 zoom. Frankly, I take better pictures with it than I do my 30D...probably not the camera's fault. Oh, well...
