It may look complicated but it's very simple to make this:

Just use a layer style or an effect on a layer using gray and transparency.
In this example, I used the drop shadow effect but if the "Gold PET frame" was used, it would
simply follow each edge as shown at the butterly picture (butterfly cookie cutter tool).
I used (#808080) that is Overlay-neutral color (50% gray).

The "PET frames" in the subscribers download area was used to create the
"self-framed" butterfly, simply using gray and transparency.
I found and shot the fossil - all the other stuff is just layer styles...

PS. The PET i is an abbreviation of Photoshop Elements Technic (or something like)...
