I have a new Nikon D-80 and just tried to shoot in RAW format and bring in to Elements 5.0. I understand once it is there I must use the converter to convert and work with but when I go to import it gives me an error and says the file format is not supported. I went as far as manually loading onto the hard drive from the camer and changing the extension from blank to .nef. That allowed the import program to show the files but I got the same error as it actually dod the import. Anyone familiar with importing .NEF files?

Have you updated your Camera Raw plug-in to version 3.6?
The D80 isn't supported in version 3.5.

Blake,

Gareth is right, you need 3.6... But, you better check your file names again. The original extension was hidden. With your new extension, PSE may not recognize them.
In XP go to Folder Options, View tab and uncheck Hide Extensions for known File Types.

I did what both of you suggested, first the folder options which didn't solve it but I am sure was the right thing to do, then I installed 3.6 and that solved the problem. Thanks everybody!:D

How to find out which version I have and how to update it?
I have PE 5.0. Does it comes with Camera Raw already or do I have to get the plugin? I can open NEF files with PE 5.0, but the screen does not have camera automatic adjustments on it. Is the screen I am seeing the Camera Raw plugin? If not, can the Camera Raw plugin do the camera auto-adjustments?
On Adobe site there is a list of plugin updates for Camera Raw. But they are all called updates, so do I need the full product first to install an update?
Sorry for so many questions..

You should have Camera Raw installed as standard, Cezar.
If you open a raw file from within PE5, you will get the Camera Raw screen, giving you the options to change white balance, exposure etc.
From the PE5 menu, select Help > About Plug-in > Camera Raw. This will tell you the version you have - probably 3.5.

You can get the 3.6 upgrade and installation instructions here:

Cezar,
If you need ACR 3.6 depends on what camera you have. Opening a RAW image with PSE5 will first start the Camera RAW plug-in. If you get a this screen, then you do not need the update, your camera is supported:
