Hi all,
Just a bit confused about how to use the brushes in the preset manager.
I've allready reset my preferences....still no go. I've started with a blank canvas, added a backround, then tried to add a brush effect. When I click on the brush and drag it to the canvas, nothing happens. Am I missing steps? The video tuts really haven't helped either.

I don't know what video you're talking about, I'll start with common problems :

Make sure your brush mode is set to normal
Make sure that the brush opacity is at 100%
Make sure your painting on the top layer
Make sure that this layer blending mode is normal

Hope this helps :)

Ray,
Thanks for the check list. The videos i referred to are in the subscribers area. One deals with making brushes and the other is about the preset manager.

Hi Chas ...

The preset manager is just a way to save and organise brushes you can't use your brushes from there ... to use any brush just open up the brushes palette and access them that way :)

To load other brush sets you click on the little triangle top right hand corner of the brushes palette and choose the load brushes option :)

Not sure if that will answer your question but I hope it does :)

Chas... do your other brushes work fine when you choose them?
and... not to be insulting but you are picking the brush tool and not one of the others? :o

There has got to be a way to sort this out.

another one - make sure you're not using white paint on white canvas!

I often get mixed up with the background eraser tool (which looks a lot like the paintbrush icon) - make sure that's not it.

Preferences shouldn't have anything to do with it, nor should the preset manager.

Thanks for all the help. This is getting clearer.....I've been trying to access the brushes from the preset manager not the brushes pallette. Since this is my first excursion into "brush using country", please bear with my ignorance. Thanks again.

Does that mean you have got it working?
Be honest now... if you are still having problems? say so. :)

Hi Chas ...

I thought that might be what you were trying to do ... it fooled me in the early days as I thought that I should have been able to open up the preset manager and then use them.

Then someone told me to think of the preset manager as an organiser of brushes and from then on it all seemed much clearer :)

Hi Chas... I think you got it! I would love to be able to see the entire image. Can you go to File, Save to Web. Change your size to 700 for the largest size and choose Maximum.

Repost to Pixentral. :D

Is there something different with Jodi's style effects than the ones that came with PSE5? I tried doing a brush composition using Jodi's backrounds and nothing happened. The brush showed up in the icon but not the main canvas. Any ideas out there about this?

Hi Chas ...

Jodi's downloads are layer styles ... and they make frames around your images :)

Wendy,
Here's what confused me.... I set up a blank canvas and clicked on one of Jodi's layer styles and the entire canvas was filled with the layer style.I guess this happens when you try to frame a blank canvas....? Yes? I can use layer styles/image effects for backrounds....???

Hi Chas ...

First thing is that layers styles don't work on the background layer ..

So create a new layer, fill it with white and apply one of Jodi's layer styles and you will see the frame :)

Hope this helps :)

Wendy,
Thanks for setting me in the right direction.
Jodi's layer styles/photo tints is actually where I was. Inow know that the brush tools can be used with them as long as you apply them to a separate layer with the photo tint as a backround layer. Learn something new every day....:)
