i am about to purchase elements (for apple), but can't find info whether elements can convert B&W negs to positives, can someone answer this, please?

I bought a film/slide scanner and had good results with scanning some old black and white negatives -- if your scanner is designed to scan negatives it will work out OK.

Thanks for that, one more thing tho' . . . is there much elements can do with b&w negs or is it only useful once positives are created?

Elements can't really work with negatives -- so bringing them in as positives gives you the most options.

I have a Photosmart 3210 All in one scanner and I have very poor results in scanning negs.I was an ardent hobiest with bk.& w. photo. many, many years ago and have tons of negs that I would love to work on. As I understand, one needs a very expensive scanner to do so.I would value your opinion on this subject. not neccesarily recomending a brand, but just sharing your knowlege. BillandCat

Couldn't you just scan a negative ... bring it into PSE as a negative ... and then INVERT the image ?

Invert does quite do the same thing :)

It's pretty close though and does often work as well as the scanner inverts. Neither though will match what you did with chemistry in the good old days so you'll almost always need to do some fine tuning.

By Invert, I meant ... invert to get a positive and then Edit & Enhance as you would to improve any other B&W picture ... see posted tutorials.
