I am catalogue family pictures. The scanner is defaulting to save the images as a jpeg file. Is this better thatn saving them as tiff files? I have already saved some images as tiff files. Will this make a difference? If I save them as a jpeg file ,what resolution should I use? If a scan more than one picture at a time what is the best way to seperate the pictures once in PSE?

I hope someone will come along soon to help you out with your questions. I have scanned lots of pictures and when I import them into PSE I have an option of what to save as. I usually just save as an PSD file. I have PSE4 and there is an option on the tool (Image>Divide Scanned Photos) where you can divide the pictures as long as you have a space between the pictures the program will automatically divide them for you and then you can name each one separately.

By catalogue I assume you are wanting to Archive them. Jpeg images are normally smaller when saved but are a "lossy" format. There can be some loss of detail when compressing. For that reason I normally save them as a Tiff which is a "lossless" format. The file will be larger when saved but you don't experience loss of detail.
The normal advice when scanning is to scan at the resolution you want for a final product. However, using that advice means I have to know ahead of time that I will never want to make a print - I will always want to display the image; if I want to make a print then I'm faced with another dilemma of what size print, 4 x 6, 5 x 7, 9 x 12, etc. So my solution is to scan at a high resolution - in my case 600 dpi - because I can always reduce it but it is difficult to increase the resolution and keep the quality.
I hope that may help
