View Full Version : Snow White text effect

Dear all

I would like to let you know that I created a new text effect, the SNOW WHITE TEXT. This (free) action will add some snow, ice and a reflection to your custom text.
You need to have an existing image open prior to running this action. The action won't manipulate the image: it will create a new doc from scratch.

Click the image below to see a larger example of what the action does:
http://www.pixentral.com/hosted/14Yvx170URdvX8JhZrxLmyVeZJp81h_thumb.jpg (http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=14Yvx170URdvX8JhZrxLmyVeZJp81h)

The file can be downloaded from the PS Elements section (http://www.panosfx.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=142&Item id=47) of my site.

Regards!

Thanks so much Wendy and Christine :)

Should you require a version that uses smaller fonts, please let me know. The product of this action is suitable for printing purposes.

Panos I have a question regarding your downloads. I am sure this was asked before sorry :o

If (when) I get PSE5 for Christmas do I have to redownload your effects for PSE5? I have PSE4 now. Thanks again for all your wonderful effects!

Panos
November 26th, 2006, 01:24 PM
No, Christine. All the actions are PSE5 compatible (but one: the Big Picture, but I will fix that soon).

Just read the instructions posted by Grafi, Tony and others here, that describe how to install the atn files in PSE5. I have also written a short tute on my site, that shows you how to do this.

Dear All:

Hold on a minute, don't download the action right now:
I found a way to keep intact the layers that make up the overall effect, without having to merge them down.

I am working out the new version now and I will hopefully update it in 10 minutes.

Panos
November 26th, 2006, 01:40 PM
I just updated the action! :) :)
The new version leaves all layers intact at the end. In this way you can turn off the visibility of e.g. the stalactites layer, to get a different effect.

Thanks Panos for another great action. Luckily I found this thread after your upgrade to it so I won't have to redownload.:D Can't wait to use it.

Panos - when I download, I don't see the Elements 3.0 version. I tried installing the 4.0 version, but it's not working right in 3.0. Am I missing something?

Thanks for any help.

Panos: Thank you, great effect and I put it to immediate use.

Linda: I did check the PSE4 one in PSE3 3 and there is a problem as PSE3 doesn't support paragraph text. Not sure if there's a way round this.

Hi Linda ...

On the Mac version of PSE3 I get a message "Paragraph text object, which must be converted to point text in order to be editable in Photoshop Elements. Convert paragraph text?"

If I then click on Yes the actions runs just fine ...

What happens when you run it ??

Wendy: When I tried it on Windows PSE3 I got that message, clicked Yes and it started to run OK but then ran into a bunch of "Layer not available messages" and finished up with only the reflection layer with nothing on it. Not sure why Windows would be different from Mac  . Also the first message about point text conversion means that you can't edit the text.

Wendy, I have the same problem Tony tells about. I can't edit the text, and then get those layer messages. It just won't work for me :(

Panos, a couple of questions?

I have PSE5. I installed this version but I get no thumbnail with the action. It does the same thing when I install my other effects from you. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong. I took 5 out and put in the one for 4. I get a thumbnail with the effect. (as in on the side of it) I know in 4 the thumbnail was the action. Again, is this just me?

BTW... I had to hit Control Enter to get the effect to work. Just Enter would not work. I am on a laptop. :)

It is a really cool effect and will be great with the holidays. Thanks!!

Hi Kimi :)
Thanks for the Control+Enter tip! I didn't consider laptop users

Things are a bit complicated (unless I am missing something) as far as the PSE5 action thumbnails are concerned:
In order to view the action thumbnail you need to have a psd file called Thumbs.psd within the same folder where you saved the action.

A. If you keep each action in its own folder then you can open my PSE4 thumbnail and save it as "Thumbs.psd" within this folder.

B. On the other hand, many users keep a number of actions within the same folder. In this case you can create a 64x64 new psd file and move the respective PSE4 thumbnails as individual layers within this document. BUT you must take care of two things:
1. Each layer has to have the same name as the respective action.
2. The layers must be ordered in a reverse - alphabetical order, in the Thumbs.psd document.

If I am missing something here, people please give a helping hand (I am making my first steps in the PSE world :) )

Panos

Panos: You have it absolutely right - at least as far as my understanding goes. In that I tend to move actions in and out of folders as I try them I don't worry about missing thumbnails. I also have my Artwork and Effects pallette set to List View which gives a tiny thumbnail (if there is one) but lots of room for text so you can see long action names. I find them a lot easier to find that way.

Hopefully something can be created to correct the problem. It looks like a great action.

Tony, I agree. I too prefer the list view (I am used to that in my CS2 :)).
I am going to send you a version which I hope will work in PSE3. Pls check your email soon :)

This works great and looks great but just curious??? Is it possible to change the red color text to green if needed to with the snow white effect?

Jancy

Panos
November 30th, 2006, 01:47 AM
Jancy,

When the action finishes playing, the layer "Text" is selected.

1. In the main PSE menu select Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation.
Move the Hue slider to 110 and press OK. The Hue/Saturation adjustment layer shows on the layers palette.

2. With the Hue/Saturation layer selected, hold down the SHIFT key and click the TEXT layer, to select both layers. Press Control+E (Mac:Command+E) to merge them.

That's it :)

Did I miss anything concerning this working on a Mac w/ PSE3? I tried it towards the beginning of this thread - but it didn't work correctly and Panos said he was going to be looking into it. Hopefully it can work w/ PSE3.
Thanks

That's great Jancy!!! Well done!
If you don't merge the two layers you will have a redish background which is also interesting!

As for the PSE3 version, I need to find some spare time, my friends. I have a very hectic agenda these days :(! Tony gave me a veru nice clue on how to overcome the PSE3 text issue!

Dear PSE3 users, the embossed label and the snow white text actions are almost there. I will let you know with another message as soon as the files are uploaded.
