View Full Version : PSE 4 clipping problems

I’m using PSE 4 on a Compaq laptop with Widows XP, and having clipping problems when I try to print 4x6 pictures. Using the Editor or Organizer same issue.
I have resized the image to smaller sizes, but this did not solve the problem. In the Editor I uncheck the CROP TO FIT PRINT PROPORTIONS box and the image is reduced down to Height: 4.397, Width: 3.997.
But I still get the Print Clipping warning, I check Scale To Fit Media box, and get a print about 4.50 x 3.75. I also tried using Windows Photo Printing Wizard, it printed the same size 4.50 x 3.75 without all prompts and warnings, it was automatically sized to those dimensions. When I down loaded the same images to our desk top using Windows ME and Kodak Easy Share I can print the full 4x6 without any problem. So is it operator error on my part, or some setting in PSE, or my laptop that I’m not aware of ?

Hi ...
You image need to be in the proportions of 4:6 to be able to print out at that ... otherwise you will get clipping.
Try using the crop tool ... set to 4:6 but with no resolution set (small boxes at the top of the screen) then crop your image to that ratio.
Hopefully that will sort it out :)

Thanks Wendy, I tried cropping the image to a 4x6, and also tried 3x5, and 2.5x2 and still the image is larger than printable area.
But when I set the Height, and Width to 4.50x3.50 in the Print Preview area then the image is not to large, but that doesn’t give a full 4x6 print. What puzzles me is that I can print the same pictures on our desk top pc using the Kodak Easy Share program without any problems at all. And the fact that the Windows Photo Wizard on my laptop prints the same size image 4.50x3.50 by default, makes wonder that the problem may not be in the PSE program

Hi there
If you have a true 4 by 6 image, in your print preview dialog box under print size ...select Actual size.
Then click page setup and work your way to your print driver properties. In the properties be sure the paper size settings are correct. Check the orientation.
When you close the properties be sure the orientation is still correct... sometimes elements and your print driver will not match.
Then close and press print and see if that works.

Hi Butch
In the Print Preview, in the Actual Size box I have, Actual Size (6.00” X 4.00”)
Scale 100, Height: 4, Width: 6 in inches, and the image in the preview box is still larger than print area and I get the print clipping warning, I always make sure that the page setup and printer properties are set correctly, I have cropped to actual 4x6 size, I’ve tried resizing without cropping to 4x6, and even smaller but for what other reason the clipping issue still remains, and again thanks.

Hmmm maybe someone else has some ideas. The only way I can duplicate your problem is if I have a paper size set in my printer smaller than the file I am trying to print.

Butch: I get that clipping message quite often in PSE5. One reason is that if you haven't set the printer properties to borderless then 4x6 won't fit on 4x6 paper as the printer has to have a border. Even borderless gives the clipping message sometimes - setting 4x6 will sometimes give sizes like 5.995x4.005 and that will generate a clipping error on a printer setting of 6x4. I tend to just ignore it or change the Print Size to Fit to Page which then seems to always get it right.
The OP's problem however seems to be different as the prints are coming out a very different size - in my case I'm only talking fractions of an inch differences which isn't noticeable on the final print.

Hi Tony
I've had problems like that as well. I was trying to print borderless on a type paper that in my driver did not support borderless printing.
I would love to see screen shots of his.... Print preview window, his Page setup window, and his Printer properties window.
If nothing shows up there I wonder if resetting prefs would help or reinstalling his print driver?
