Two designers walk into a bar and sit down with their Powerbooks. One designer says to the other, "How much you want to bet I can correct the highlight and shadow of this image without using any adjustment tools or filters directly on the image?

The other designer takes him up on the bet and a minute later begrudgingly hands his associate $10.

How did the first designer win the bet?

The designer used a contrast mask to adjust his highlights and shadows. You can too by following these simple steps.

1. Open and image that has plugged shadows and/or blown out highlights
2. Duplicate that layer (Command + J)
3. Desaturate the duplicated layer (Shift + Command + U)
4. Invert the duplicated layer (Command + I)
5. Change the duplicated layer's blend mode to Overlay
6. Filter, Blur, Gaussian Blur (around 30)

The contrast mask will reduce the blown out highlights and open up the plugged shadows. You can then of course make further adjustments by changing the duplicated layer's opacity, changing the blend if settings in the Layer Style dialog box or by adding a layer mask to isolate areas.

Kimi, yes, there is a big difference. You tip is a great thing to remember and try when that type of correction is needed.

Then I gave the road picture a try with my usual method--levels adjustment, color curves, unsharpen mask and finally one of Jodi's frames.

I haven't compared it to the one I did using your tip. I'll do that in a few minutes.

Thanks Kim! For starters, I didn't even know about Invert! This tip works very well, but there's not apparent reason why it does, what with the blurring and all! NEway, some of the pictures posted in this thread look a bit "overdone" to me. One addition to this is that when you have the invert layer all done, you can change the opacity of that layer from 1-100 to get just the right amount of the effect for the photo. Thanks again!

Go to file, save for web. resize you image to less than 700 pixels for your largest size. (I usually go to 600 so you can see the entire image) Once it shows on Pixentral, look at the bottom you will see two URL's. Copy the one that says forum. Post the link and it will show the thumbnail to click on. Make sure you get the entire address. :)

After applying the technique you provided and messing around with Curves in CS2, I then ran the picture through a program called Neat Image to try and clear up all the digital noise. It's not a great " After" photo, but at least you can now see what I was trying to take a picture of. Kim once again, thanks for the great tip. And Kev, THANK you for telling me how to post the picture.

Kimi - this is a great tool! I just tried it on an image taken indoors at a musical type concert we went to tonight. The stage was lit up and spotlights were on the singers. It did a nice job. I went back and tried it with Shadows/Highlights and it actually pulled more out. I think the photo has to be just right to get the POP like is shown so far in this thread.

It's still not working..I'm duplicating the layer, then I desaturate (turns to black/white), then I inverted which turned it more whiter, then I changed the blend mode from normal to Overlay (it's still b/white). All this on the duplicated layer. Then I went to gaussian blur where it showed the picture in color. Then I went back and looked at my picture but it was still b/w.

After I desaturated, it never went back to color.

It was the only photo taken,(don't know if there will ever be another, and my DH (ol capt. wonderful) didn't look and see what was taken. The flash bounced off the wall, etc....
Using this method, I do think it improved tremendously. I still plan to work on the greenery in the flash blowout.
