Hello all. I am the happy new owner of a Macbook Pro - my first Mac. :) I was using elements 4 on PC and would like to get all the pictures with tags and other relevant information to my Mac. I tried doing a backup on the PC and restore to Mac...but I can't find how to restore to Mac. Any suggestions on the best way to do this? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I am not 100% certain, but I recall that the mac does not support the organizer.
Many mac users here, they should be by soon.

JVM,
Here's a tut I posted here several months ago on how to get iPhoto to import the tags from Photoshop Album. I never tested it myself because at the time I switched, none of this existed. But guys who wrote to me confirmed it worked in the past, on several occasions.
--------------------------------
http://scriptbuilders.net/files/iphotoiptckeywordimportexportutilities1.0.html
This guy made a script, using Graphics Converter, to import IPTC tags from your images into iPhoto Keywords. It also uses another script for creating the new keywords in iPhoto (this one is free).
Graphics Converter : http://lemkesoft.de/en/graphcon.htm
And the script for iPhoto : http://homepage.mac.com/kenferry/software.html (it's the first one, top of the page)
You might be able to use an evaluation version of Graphics Converter. Say you start this on a Saturday morning an promise to complete by the end of the following day, you'll be ok :)
I haven't tested this solution, but I haven't read anything negative about it so I'd say it's ok. But start slowly. Pick only a handful of images, something will be able to check manually without spending the whole day tracking the last import session.
The way I think it works :
- Open iPhoto
- Drag and drop a bunch of images (keep things simple even after the test is complete, do a few at a times, not 1000...)
- Select those images in iPhoto. To do this, it's very simple. Click on the Last Roll, just below your Library, in the left pane, at the top. iPhoto will show but only the last images imported. Press Command - A to select them all.
- Run the script.
- In an open Finder window, where your newly downloaded scripts are, double click on the Import IPTC Keywords to iPhoto Keywords
------------------------------------
Hope this helps !

JVM I am in the same boat as you. I connected my mac directly to my pc using a firewire and from the mac, simply opened iPhoto and then selected the network drive (on the pc) and imported them. I have all the organizing to do all over again (in albums), but all the keywords were recognized for the images. That helped. There was one hiccup with the keywords (it apparently didnt allow the other iLife apps to view the pics), and I had to delete some and change some settings. That may not happen to you. Whatever you do, like Ray said-- work in small chunks and play around with the photos and see what's happening. Once you get the jist of how the programs are working then you can move fast forward and streamline the process.
I just got my mac version of PSE4 and I am getting the feel for that and how iPHoto works along side it. It takes a bit getting used to, but I am loving it. I am now telling people, once you go mac you'll never turn back!! :D

Funny thing is that at work, I'm responsible for creating and testing solutions to use software on both Windows and Mac.
So here I was testing something new yesterday, when I had to change the internet connection from the windows to the Macintosh. My partner was like jaw on the floor when she saw our Mac reconnecting itself and Safari reloading a web page automatically after discovering the Internet signal.
Later, we disconnected the Mac and plugged the cable into the windows.. you guessed it.. it never reconnected on its own.. I had to reboot
And tonight, we'll be helping another person to switch from PC to Mac. It must be the 22nd time I think.. :)

I was trying to clean up my address book and attempt another import from my Yahoo addy book. I found this tool for free (one time use) and it worked well. The birthday and anniversary fields all enetered Jan 1, 2001 though. No biggie. The first time I got the import to work (dont remember how) I was missing the street address on every record. So, I made progress.

I don't know anything about a MAC but I did find out the hard way that only JPEGs and I think maybe TIF files keep the tags. I'm a digital scrapbooker and I tried to transfer files from my old computer to a new one and the PNG files do not have tags. Be sure to "write tags to file" before you do the back up!

Oh, good point PattyD!! I wish it had an option to do that each time you closed PSE so it was more automatic.

Thanks for the tips on where to look on how to do this. I will be giving it a try this weekend - and I appreciate having an idea where to start.
Thanks again,
