Hi, I have a question. I have worked with both Premiere Elements & Photoshop Elements. I have made a video with Premiere & it worked ok. I have put stills into my videos as well.
I tried a slide show with PSE & the pictures werent very clear when I watched it on TV.
Do the pictures come out clearer using Premiere for a slide show than in PSE? OR did I do something wrong.
I heard that you should resize the images before you put them in a slide show, but to what size? If so is there an easy way to resize a bunch of pictures instead of one by one?
Which slide show would you recommend? :?
PS I liked your tutorial.

Hi,
I'm glad you liked the tutorial :)
As for your questions...
On a TV a slideshow made with PRE will look better simply due to the format.
TV takes video, PRE is a video editing system. Not knowing the resolution of your images it's hard to say what the blury issue was. I've seen both on TV and both looked good, but being the *video diva* I tend to recommend the PRE slideshow over the PE one
Image size for video is 720 x 480 so if you are going to use PRE thats the size to shoot for.
Let me know if you have any other questions!

Gary,
You won't regret it (the upgrade and the Premiere Elements purchase).
While I'm playing with the still photos, my husband is having all kinds of fun with the digital video stuff. He's definitely a Premiere Elements fan. Now he's already talking about a higher-end video camera.
Only if I get my zoom lens, I say!

These days he prefers to do the shopping for himself. Unless of course I brought him home that corvette he thinks he needs!! I did tell him if he went out and bought one it better be pretty comfy for sleeping in because he couldn't afford his own place and child support, oh and spousal support, as well as the payments for the thing and gas.
He can just borrows his friend's when he's desparate. Although that seems to have made the "need" worse rather than better!!

Hi Tami, I just now noticed this tutorial you've created and I must say it looks great! Congratulations on a job well done :)
I pretty much had the basics down for adding the images to create a slideshow but was admittedly frustrated with the title application thingy. You made it much more clearer than the Dummies book did so now I have a much better idea of how PRE works.
You mentioned above about the pixel sizes best view on the TV but you didn't mention whether or not the images should have a resolution of 72 dpi that I keep hearing about in other circles. I believe that cuts down on the rendering time but will it really show a nice image on the TV or does the resolution size make any difference?
tfry
August 4th, 2005, 06:51 PM
Thanks :)
I leave all my images at full resolution so I can do zooms and pans and such.
If you wish to drop the dpi to 72 and are just using transitions between the images you would cut down on file size and such but it does cut down on the quality of the images somewhat. For TV viewing higher res always looks nicer.

Thanks!
I took an old VHS tape and converted it to a DVD. Then I took the DVD and copied it into PE2. It does not look like the tutorial. I am trying to do transitions between clips and seem to be having problems. When I play back the DVD I get blackout areas between clips, that I would like to replace with a transition. So far I can not figure out how.
tfry
December 10th, 2005, 09:15 AM
You have black between the clips as you have space between them. Go back to your project and use the little slider at the upper left of the timeline and strrech it out (make your timeline bigger) so you can see the spaces, delete the spaces between the clips and when they are all all next to each other with no gaps, apply the transition where the two touch :)
Let me know if you need more help!

I have copied the link for the tutorial, thanks, it will come in handy. My question is, I bought Premiere Elements last year and never took it out of the box because I used another program that I really like for creating DVD/VCDs. Now, Premiere 3 is out, is there much difference in the 2 versions. I about to upgrade from Elements 4 to 5 and you can get Premiere 3 for just a few more dollars. What you think.

Some things for you to check out:
(a)There are a lot of bug reports for Premiere Elements 3.0 (Timeline Track 1 problems, Capture problems, etc.) Check out Premiere Elements User to User Forum at http://www.adobe.com for a comprehensive overview. Some feel more comfortable remaining with the 2.0 version for now.
(b) Some feel that 3.0 and 2.0 are essentially 98% the same, maybe some things moved around (ex. Titles, Interface look, etc.....some have reported workarounds). If you are interested in Narration within Premiere Elements, there is now a Narration Track in 3 and a Sceneline as well as a Timeline. If you use the Photoshop Elements 5.0 and Premiere Elements 3.0 combo, you have the choice to send the 5.0 slideshow over to Premiere Elements without writing a wmv first (some editing consideration).
(c) That brings out this point. Certain Photoshop Elements/Premiere Elements combos offer features unique to the combo. For example, with Photoshop Elements 4.0/Premiere Elements 2.0 combo you can create your own DVD menus (if you are interested in that). I am almost certain that you lose this feature if you mix Photoshop Elements 4.0 version with Premiere Elements 3.0. You need to check out the Adobe product literature. These are standalone products, so you can mix or match, but beware of the differences and the loss of some features unique to the marketed combo.
(d) If you have Windows XP Service Pack 1, you MUST have Service Pack 2 if you want to use Premiere Elements 3.0. I found that I could run Photoshop Elements 2.0 or 3.0 or 5.0 or Premiere Elements 2.0 with Service Pack 1, but NOT Premiere Elements 3.0. I may be in the minority, but I have found Service Pack 2 very troublesome however required. If you are interested in Windows VIsta, beware. There is a Vista update to address program compatiability issue, but you may solve that program and end up with a DVD/CD drive that now fails to function.
I have decided to remain with Photoshop Elements 3.0 and Premiere Elements 2.0 in my Windows XP. Sales and pricing advantages give immediate satisfaction, but it is you who may have long term headaches if you are not well informed before purchase.
This is just my opinion. If you have Photoshop Elements 4.0, open the unopened Premiere Elements 2.0 and use the both together. Although Photoshop Elements 5.0 is a very tempting step up, right now Premiere Elements 3.0 is not.

ATR, thanks. I just wish I had read this thred before I went to lunch and purchased the Combo pack of E5 and P3. Oh well, if you bought as a package it was only like $20 more. I'm not sure I understand when you talk about the "Service Pack" 1 & 2. I'm not very savy when it comes to knowing a lot of detail on computers, I'm a plug and play person. Thanks soooo much for your help.

Do you have Windows XP? If so, click Start/Control Panel/System.
When you double click on System, a description will open. In the System section, it should say what the Service Pack is, 1 or 2. In my case, I found out the hard way. My Premiere Elements 3.0 tryout just would not open. Then I had to troubleshoot after the fact to find out why.
Often I go back and forth several times before making a decision. Some may call it procrastination. But, once your decision is made, go with it with much success.

Alsayyed,
If you are having trouble with Trimming the clip (IN/OUT points), maybe first try to master the use of the Razor Tool to cut your video/audio on the Timeline? Major thing to remember, you will not see an icon for the Razor Tool unless you press the letter C on your keyboard. And, then your cursor turns into a razor to be applied to the place for cut in the video/audio on the Timeline.
BUT, if you want to give Trimming in the Preview Window another look, let us try the following as practice:
(1) Drag your clip to be edited from Available Media to the Timeline.
(2) Make sure it is selected (black bands across the top of video on Video 1 Track and, if an audio track, also a black band across the top of the audio on Audio 1 Track. Make sure you see it in Preview.
(3) In Preview, set IN point, then set OUT point.
(4) Look at your video/audio on the tracks in the Timeline. You should now see a trimmed version there. Do you? If so, that is it, nothing further to do.
Remember I am working with the 2.0 version which uses, in this case, the Monitor instead of Preview. So, I am not doing a play by play account with the 3.0 version. But, give the above idea a try and let me know what happens.
As an answer to your basic question, under the circumstances described you should be set to go.
Also, beware. There is one tutorial out there on the subject that says it is for Premiere Elements 3.0, but clearly is using Premiere Elements 2.0.

I have Premiere Elements 2.0 so that is where I am coming from.
Just an idea for you to explore:
With your clip on the Timeline
Go to the Effects & Transitions Palette/Video Effects/Adjust
In Adjust, you will find presets for
Auto Color
Auto Contrast
Auto Levels
Channel Mixer
What happens if you drag the Channel Mixer preset into your clip on the Timeline, and then go to the Properties panel to the right to make the adjustments? That did a nice job for me for a photo with a color cast.
You could experiment with other presets, but this is a starting point.

What is/are the benefit(s) of construction a slideshow over simply adding your photos as a seperate scene to the timeline?
I've created a number of productions using the seperate scene method and it seems to work well. I often integrate video and photos with a music track. However, I've never tried to integrate a slideshow. I just wondering why (and in what situations) this would be better than the seperate scene option.
Thanks for any and all oppinions!

Are you referring to using the "Create Slideshow" feature of Premiere Elements or creating a slideshow in Photoshop Elements and then sending it over to Premiere Elements? Both?
If the latter, please remind me which versions of Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements that you have.
