View Full Version : Wild Night in my Neighborhood

I have to tell you about this:
There are 4 helicoptors circling overhead, there are dozens of police cars and streets are blocked. There was a double murder in a town about 20 miles south of here and now the suspect is believed to be on foot in my neighborhood. He was last spotted entering the woods about 6 blocks from here. The woods circle around to MY BACK YARD! My parents have a police scanner and are keeping me posted but my husband is out of town and I'm here with my daughter. Doors Locked! Windows Locked! Scary!!!!

Turn on the back yard lights so your yard doesn't look like a good hiding place. I hope they get him soon!

Turn on all of the house lights so it also looks like lots of people are there.
Stay Safe!

We have a dusk-to-dawn light in our back yard because of the pool and the porch lights are on but now I'm thinking the raised deck around the pool would sure be a good thing to hide under. The dogs are in the house with me and everything is locked up but here come the helicopters circling again. Sophie wants to go out and go to the bathroom - FORGET IT! Carpet cleaners are cheap to rent!

Well it's now 8:15 pm and they are calling off the search. Helicopters are gone but there are still cops patrolling.

Nancy, that is awful. Do hope that they get him soon. My personal thought here is Sophie wanting out. I think I would be calling 911 and telling them where you live and that your dog is going nuts at the back door and see if they could sent a car to check it out. I know they are busy but it is better to be safe.

I actually used the cops as a way to get her out. When they came by I opened the door and waved and they stopped and I took her out while talking to them. By the time they told me to stay inside Sophie was done.

Oh, Nancy, that's awful!!! I hope they catch him soon. keep the lights on all night long. Double check that all your windows are locked! Make sure you don't leave your pocketbook where anyone can look in and see it! I hope they find them/him soon! I know what you mean about your deck. We have a drop off back yard so we have have about 10 steps off our deck to the ground, too.
Let us know what happens!

Nancy,
I do hope y'all stayed safe throughout this ordeal.
Once lived through a similar one, but at least it was day-light.
AND ..did you have your camera ready, just in case CNN wanted to make you rich? I'm wondering, because I didn't, and the local news team...probably would have paid for it!

Oh, yeah, here they pay for those pictures too!! Just make sure you take them from the inside of your house!!!!! They'll still pay, they put stuff on tv taken with camera phones!

They just said on the news teaser:
"is a murder suspect on a rampage? A ground search continues and the latest on what police have to say about the other crimes they believe he's involved in tonight at 10"
Great - I thought it was over. They must have moved farther away. Good!

borrow a couple of big cats from the rescue group you volunteer at. Just make sure they haven't eaten yet. :D I'm sure all be well. At least they didn't mistake you for the perp. TSA once thought I was a master terrorist hijacker and invited me to spend the night in their "facilities". I declined!

I think Lee has the right idea. A couple of big hungry cats might just end the search!
STAY SAFE AND INSIDE!

Well - here's the scoop according to the first newscast:
They believe he killed an elderly couple (in their 60's) who were previously related to him by marriage (probably in-laws but they are not saying yet) and then came 20 miles north to my city and accosted a former sister-in-law (who did not know about the parents yet according to the police) with a gun in her driveway. She escaped and called police and he was last seen entering the woods. They have called off the search and he was NOT found. They now have a statewide bulletin out for him and his truck. My daughter is off school tomorrow but I think she'll just come sit in my office instead of staying here. My hubby just called, his plane landed about 10 minutes ago so he is on the way home. Wow - I can't take too many nights like this!:D

Nancy:
ELDERLY COUPLE????? IN THEIR 60's????? THAT'S not elderly is it???? Please tell me no!!!!!!!!!
Actually, that is really awful!!! I don't know why people do things like that!!! I am so glad that your husband is on his way home, I am sure you will feel much better! and yes, tomorrow will be take your daughter to work day!
I will say some prayers that you all are able to rest easily tonight! Stay safe Nancy!

Nancy, glad hubby is on his way home. I am sure you won't get to sleep til he is in the door and it is relocked. I do hope they get this deranged person soon so that you can feel safe a gain. The whole story is just so sad to hear what that family has been put through this evening.
Be safe and have fun with your daughter at work tomorrow.

Sorry - newscaster term - not mine. I hope not because I'm heading a whole lot closer to that age and don't want to be elderly yet!:D
Thanks everyone for your concern and I do feel MUCH better now that hubby is home. Just wish they would have caught him.:(

Boy it is a scary world. Sounds like the guy is gunning for x-family members though and not on a random killing spree. I guess the only good thing about that is that at least they know who he is now.
Quite a few years back I was a bit freaked out to see a swat team on our little street. They had dogs with them......full body gear.......it was just plain strange. You are so used to seeing it on tv and not thinking of it as being real. In our case it was a domestic dispute on the next street over but they were cutting through the back yards on our street to surround the house.
Stay safe Nancy!

I think I would have totally freaked if they showed up in full swat gear!
It was bad enough seeing them in uniform with guns drawn. There was a similar search about 4 years ago but it was about a mile from my house and the guy was running away from our area through a creek. They caught him right away though.
Thanks Mike.

Scary day for you, yesterday, but I hope this morning brings you better news (the perp has been caught) so you can breathe a sigh of relief and stop worrying!

November 10th, 2006, 08:56 AM
No - no better news today. He was not caught but they do think he is on his way to Kansas City (about 250 miles from me) where his ex-wife lives so at least they THINK he has left the area.

OMG!!!! He is in a standoff with police now in Belleville (next to where he originally killed the two people) - about 20 miles south and has shot a cop! He didn't leave the area - he is at his brothers house. This will not end pretty.

Nancy,
How scary!!! But he was out for relatives/or former relatives....
The last time we had the helicopters overhead was when all those people killed themselves because they were going to catch a ride on Haley's comet--that lasted for a few days.

Well the whole ordeal is over. He was in the standoff that started at noon today and shot two officers, one barely wounded and one in critical condition clinging to life. They just announced a short time ago that the whole thing has now ended with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head and he is dead. I'm glad it's over. Two of the officers involved today (but not the two shot) are friends of mine and I'm glad they are safe and the whole thing is settled.

Oh I do hope the officer in critical condition pulls through.
This may sound cynical but I'm always relieved when the culprits decide to take their own lives. Saves the taxpayers the cost of trying them and housing them.
