I have PSE5 and I went to the layer styles in the download section. I downloaded some and unzipped them. I don't know where to put them. I looked at the tutuorial but it is for PSE3. I put them in a folder in the C:\program files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 5.0\Presets\Styles area. I ran the program but it doesn't show the ones I downloaded. I saw someones response to an earlier version of PSE by holding down the Shift key as it was loading, but it didn't work either. HELP!!!!
Thanks

Hi- I saved this from an earlier post:
Installing Layer Styles PSE5. First make sure that the "Show hidden folders and files" option is turned on in Windows. Then create a Shortcut on the desk top to:
C: Documents and Settings>All Users>Application Data>Adobe>Photoshop Elements>5.0>Photo Creations>Special Effects>Layer Styles
To install a Layer Style just create a new folder (if you need to), pop the .asl file (or files) in it and then drop the folder on the shortcut ... restart Elements and the layer style then shows up in Special Effects>Layer Styles
-----------------------------------------------------
Installing actions PSE5. First make sure that the "Show hidden folders and files" option is turned on in Windows. Then create a Shortcut on the desk top to:
C: Documents and Settings>All Users>Application Data>Adobe>Photoshop Elements>5.0>Photo Creations>Special Effects>Photo Effects
To install an action just create a new folder (if you need to), pop the .atn file (or files) in it and then drop the folder on the shortcut ... restart Elements and the action then shows up in Special Effects>Photo Effects.

also you can go to Graficalicus (http://www.graficalicus.com/index.php)He has a download that will help without going into the C:doc file. It's called Graffi-add-o-matic. You may have to be a member but it's worth it.

I tried to go to the path that was suggested but I don't have that path. I have all hidden folders checked. I found the adobe folder with PSE5, but I can't find any folder that has photo creations>Special Effects>Layer Styles. I found the one that I have added a folder in the Layer styles folder but the downloads don't come up in the program.
Any other suggestions?

Hi Wendy,
First, I want to thank you for responding. I'm new to this website and I am blown away by how helpful everyone is. THANK YOU!!!!
Back to the path... Maybe I should tell you I have 2 drives. The program is on C and all my pictures, music, etc... are on drive F. I looked in drive F and it goes F:Administrator> then opens up to all the medial folders I have, i.e. My Pictures, My Documents, My Videos, etc... I searched both drives for a folder called photo creations or special effects. I know how to look around a computer but I can't figure this out. I can't even find a folder called Application Data. I have Elements 5. Does that change where I should put things?
Thanks again for your help.
Todd

Hi Wendy,
I guess I needed a good nights sleep. I found the folder. My computer is all unorganized. I put my download in and ran the program. IT WORKS!!!!! So do I do the same with everything else? i.e. text styles, frames, etc. Just put them in the corresponding folder?
Once again, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!
Forever humble,
Todd

Hi Todd ...
So glad that you found it :)
Most things you download still go in the usual place C:\program files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 5.0\Presets\ (then in file type folders ... brushes etc)
its just layer styles and actions that are now installed in a different place ...
You should have the path now for Layer Styles and Kay's post also showed the one for actions (Like Grant's tools etc) ... but here it is again :)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Installing actions PSE5.

Its pretty easy to do once you get the hang of it but if you get stuck just ask :)

Hi All,
XP system
When I place the three files, DS store, Orb.atn and Wendy's ord PSD into the photo effects folder the action is loaded. However, there are two boxes shown for the orb action in the artwork and effects bin under the subheading of special effects. One box is titled Orb and is without an image. The other box is titled Wendy's orb and shows the blue orb on a green background. The action is initiated when clicking apply on the box without the image. Clicking apply on the box with the image puts that orb image into the workspace as a new layer.
I've noticed that some other styles that I copied over from PSE3 to PSE5 are without images being dispalyed in PSE5 but did have sample images associated with them in PSE3.
Thanks for you thoughts on how to reconcile sample images for the actions and styles.

Hi Jonnie ...
With PSE5 you actually don't need the .psd thumbnails ... as you found out the action will work just by clicking on the blank image of the acion itself. Just remove the psd file from the folder and restart Elements and that will sort it out :)

Hi Wendy,
It would nicer if the action or style had a sample icon in the action/style box as it was in PSE3. I was aware of being able to remove the PSD files but that was different than the goal of obtaining an action/style icon.
Oh well..
Thanks for the response.
Stay well,
Johnny

Wendy,
I don't know if anyone else has tried this, but I have successfully done this to two different Actions----Your Orb, and Panos' Scroll to be exact. All I did was to rename the .psd file that was shown in the effects palette. In each case I renamed it to "Thumbs.psd" and restarted Elements (ver.5). It rebuilt the file and now I only have ONE square with the proper icon for the action.........and it works just fine.

Kay,
I found the folder, I created a shortcut and I put the new styles in that folder. Now when I open PSE5, none of my styles show up in the pallet!?!
What did I do wrong??

You may have gone too deep into the file structure.
You can only go two folders deep into the Special effects folder. You can"t have Special Effects>Layer styles>folder 1>folder 2
This may be your problem, it has caught a bunch of us.:)
