View Full Version : Bad news - daughter turned her ankle

For those of you who have waited for more ballet pictures (as I have waited to take more), my lovely daughter has re-injured her ankle (she is 14). She has two major dances in the upcoming Nutcracker and is working with a physical therapist to hopefully be ready to dance for the performances. In the meanwhile, she walks through the dance steps with a brace on and then ices her ankle after each 2 hour practice (almost daily). It's heartbreaking and most difficult as a parent to know where to draw the line and to listen to my daughter as she describes the pain level and decide what she should and should not be doing. She is a dancer to her very soul... just as I am a drummer. I cannot take that out of her soul. So I must help her be patient with the recovery... and ready with the camera when she dances. God gave us children so that we can understand His love.

So sorry about the injury. Tell her to be patient and do as recommended by physician and therapist for a full recovery. However frustrating:(
Will look forward to Nutcracker pics!

Watching your kids hurt and experience pain is one of the tough ones, isn't it, Norm?
My prayers for your daughter.

Norm I feel your pain. My eldest daughter lives for basketball and every time I see her take a fall I cringe.....My biggest fear is that she will hurt herself. If she couldn't play she would drive me crazy!! She was on crutches once about 6 years ago for a brief 3 days period!! It was hell!!

Norm,
It sounds like you both are injured! Tell her to do what the doc says so she can do the Nutcracker---my favorite!

I'm so sorry to hear that. She is so beautiful and even LOOKS like a dancer. You're right - some things are just in your soul no matter what. Just hang in there with her and urge her patience and be sure we get a beautiful picture to applaud since we can't be there in person when she does return.

Norm,
So sorry to hear of your daughters problem, Please make sure she follows
the doctors orders and doesn't do permanent damage.
It would be a shame to miss this dance, but her health comes first
and there will always be another..
Tom :)

Norm,
Best Wishes for a speedy recovery to your daughter. When you have a talent and are dedicated it is hard to take it easy. The only thing you can do is advise her to listen to her therapist. God Willing, everything will turn out OK.

Norm, she's such a lovely dancer. I hope she can have some patience and let it heal -- unlike the average young and invincible teen.

Norm,
I hope your daughter makes a speedy recovery and is back to dancing soon.
It's horrible seeing your children in pain...my 20yr old son has had excruciating pain in his knee for a few weeks now....had an MRI scan two weeks ago which showed damage to his ligament and swelling under the kneecap from a soccer injury five years ago...he underwent an arthroscopy yesterday for a good look around & repair....he is now forced to rest it, no more soccer for at least a month and lots of physiotherapy starting next week...but at least the awful pain has gone away (though he's a bit woozy still from the general anaesthetic!)

Oh Norm, I feel for you both. Please do not let your daughter rush things. It is sooo important to heal properly. Hopefully she has a lifetime of dancing ahead of her.

Norm:
How awful! I am so sorry for both of you.
I, like Pauline, have a daughter who just lives for basketball. She has played since 1st grade. Back in 5th grade she was out for 3 or 4 weeks on crutches....it was so hard to explain to her that she need to recover completelyas she would be walking on those ankles for another 80 years. They don't get it, they just want to play or dance.
Unfortunately, she is only 5ft. This is her Senior. She came home in tears from "open gym" last night, again. She has to work twice as hard for the "scraps" because of her height. Hard to watch you kids hurt....both physically and emotionally. We are just praying for the strength to get through whatever next week brings.

Hi Norm,
Started another thread last evening as I got lost last night trying to post back to you here.
Wishing you all the best with the ankle recovery.
I do think it can be as hard on us parents as it is the kids.

Yes Norm -do keep us posted.
Bayla--speedy recovery for your child also.
Colleen--I didn't realize your BB player is only 5 feet! What a little toughy! I admire her for playing. I'm sure she plays her heart out and is a great asset to the team.
I admire these kids following their dreams at such a young age. I always loved softball but did not start playing until after 40. Yes 4-0. I did okay for a couple years (outfield). 2 years ago tried first base (practice). Broke and dislocated a finger in my rt hand in 3 places. Old reflexes are not what they used to be:( No more in-field for me. I stay in rt. field. Or if enough players, I just keep score.:D

Norm, just heard about your daughter in Michelle's post. I'm sure she will make the right choices with regard to her injury and her recovery will be a successful one!
P.S. My brother is a drummer to his "soul" too so I can see firsthand what having a passion can do to a person when something happens to keep that person from continuing that passion.
