My daughter and a friend have started a business and she wants help designing letterhead/business card. No problem - except she has supplied a starfish image and she wants the colour change, once again - no problem. The problem is, in her view the image will be deemed to be a full colour image - she wants the starfish "just like grey scale but with colour" In my opinion, it will not matter what I do because once I take the starfish, convert it to greyscale and put a colour over it (changing blendmode to overlay), it will still be a full colour image. Am I right or . . .

Here is the original starfish with three coloured ones:

Sounds like what she wants is a 'tint', so yes it would make a difference. It is lighter and more transparent in colour. Not sure if I explained it right.

Take your image and turn it to grey scale and try it. Put it side by side with the colour and you should see a difference.

Good luck with your project.

Pauline is right. I think she is probably looking for more of a muted color and that would work with converting it to grayscale first. Depending on the opacity of your color layer it could be very pale, almost sketch-like or pretty saturated at full opacity. I'm guessing if it is for letterhead and business cards your probably looking at somewhere between 40-60% opacity to give a soft color to it.

Psst. Hue/Saturation adjustement layer... Take the saturation down a notch. No need to go grayscale first.... Pretend I wasn't here.

Pauline, Nancy (& Brice),

Thanks for your tips, I will try them and send them up to Leah. It has been quite difficult doing this over the phone/email but I think we are getting closer to what Leah wants.

Karen, I feel your pain. I'm doing a logo for someone too and trying to get a straight answer through e-mail is a pain. Sometimes it takes a week before I hear a response, and then his idea has changed. I'm about ready to throw in the towel. I sent 3 more to him today and hope that he is FINALLY satisfied with one and I can end this painful process.
