Somewhere, somplace I saw a tut for grograin ribbon. Not sure if it was referenced here or not but if anyone knows where I can find a tutorial that would give me the steps for the crinkling and edges I would appreciate it. I am going to check Linda's scrapbook site to see if it was there.

Thanks for any help.

Thanks, I couldn't find it on her site but I probably didn't look hard enough. I hate trying to find stuff on the internet as I don't have DSL and after about an hour without results I've had it.

Anyway, I figured out how to get the result I wanted with the patchwork texture and a bevel effect set to 0.

I have been working for the past month trying to get down the scrapbook techniques to make pages that are interesting but not too busy.

I'm posting my latest efforts. The first one is my beginning attempt at this particular page. It was blah and the journaling wasn't really me so I slept on it and came up with version 2 which I like better.

I made the blocks with the 3D filter. My first block took forever but once I got the feel for it the rest were easy.

Hi Pat ..

Really like the 2nd one ... it looks good :) No 1 looks OK but I do agree with you that No 2 is much nicer.

Great job on the blocks!

Thanks Wendy.

I was going brain dead on ideas so I picked up a couple of books/magazines on the stuff. One of them, a magazine called "A Simple Guide to Designing Scrapbooks" put out by Simple Scrapbooks really turned out to be a gem in that it went into color schemes, use of focal point and eye paths, use of shapes (like ribbons) and a few other things I just wasn't using properly. Gave me quite a few ideas on how to "design" a page.

Forgot to add a little internet funny.

In all my photos I had very few pictures of the toys my kids played with so I went on the internet, looked up toys, found several I liked and downloaded them to use in my layouts. I didn't order anything or give any personal information, just found a picture I liked and dowloaded it.

Since then I get about 3 spam mails a day to buy baby products. Just goes to show how cookies are used.

Pat,

The magazine sounds really good ... its nice to find something that stimulates you towards new ideas :)

Wow ... picking up spam that way is just incredible !!

Patricia,

I've been playing with the 3D transform filter after seeing your blocks... I'm trying to figure out how to get different images on every face of the block. Is there a tutorial out there for the effect?

Brice,

You need to use Image>Tranform>Distort.

Make your box then import an image you want to put on one of the sides
Image>Tranform>Distort and a box will come up around your small image
You can then move each corner to fit to the corners of the box

that should sort it out :)

So what I am reading is use 3D transform to create a Box and then use the distort to make pictures match the surface of the box.

The problem I am having is when I create a 3D box, I get a white blob without edges that I can use for reference when distorting the images to be placed on the box.

I've tried creating a 3D transform onto an existing image and I can't get the edges of the 3D box to "square" up with the sides of the picture so I can then rotate the box to add more pictures... Is this something I can find in Scott's books?

Brice,

I have to admit that the 3D filter isn't something I use much ... I tend to just create my own boxes. But I don't think that you can create a 3D box add an image to one side, rotate it and add images to the other sides.

Here is a link to the way I have seen it used:

Maybe Pat can give us a little more information about how she did it :)

I gave it a whirl awhile back. Please understand that this was a first attempt, and I know you can see some inconsistencies on some of the edges. But I didn't find it terribly difficult -- just time consuming.

Give it a try. I think you'll find it fun.

Wendy, I had stumbled into the spinning trick, but when I spin the image it moves to unexpected places in the layer. I've solved it by selecting the greyed image and cutting everything else out, but it's really a pain to use this tool.

Brice,

I think its a lot easier to just make the box yourself. Here is a link to an excellent tut on how to do it ... its written for the full version of Photoshop but works fine in Elements.

If you get stuck just let me know :)

Wendy, Wendy, Wendy,

Once again you advertise a link and then you didn't include it. I chalk it up to some kind of time difference coming across the pond.

Hi all.

I'll try to explain the filter in a few minutes. Have to go feed some babies right now.

Brice, if I remember correctly, I went to Hue/Sat and lowered the lightness to make the box shade slightly so I could see all 3 faces. If you have Scott Kelby's book Down and Dirty tricks there is a section in there on making photo cubes (pg 224) that will take you through the steps. IF you don't have his book, like I said, I will get back in a minute.

Linda, yours is very good. I sort of like the way the filter works myself.

OK Brice.

Went into program to refresh my memory.

You need to deselect the background to get dimension.

Here is what I did.

Before you go to the filter create a new blank document. Go to the filter and draw out a box. After you have drawn the box, you have to go under options and deselect the show background box, then get the rollerball tool and turn the box until you have all 3 sides grey, hit ok and the box should appear on your document. Once it is there you can color it (I used Hue/Sat) and then add text to each box. As Wendy said, you put the text on any side and then use the free transform function to skew it into the shape. On mine, once I had the block covered, I applied a bevel to the text to make it look like old fashioned print. I also stroked each square to get the red edges and applied a bevel to that also. Final step, per Scott Kelby is to duplicate the block and apply a soft light mode to the duplicate layer. This helps add dimension and lights the bottom of the block.

I think that is all the steps.

Great instructions Patricia. I do have that book (looks like I'll be picking up the "Missing Manual" book too) and I'll have a look. Couldn't resist pulling Wendy's leg though...

Wendy,

You take the fun out of teasing you when you actually post the link!!! You spoiled it. Neat site. Once again you come up with yet a new place to learn more. Granted, some of the tuts here would require full blown PS, many techniques still apply. Thanks.

Brice,

I get so carried away with typing in the message that I just tend to forget the links ... thank goodness that a few of you remind me :)

The tut on how to do boxes is the way I then ... once you get used to it then its really easy.

Thanks for that tutorial Wendy. I'm going to give it a try too. Maybe I'll get an even better block. Now that I have a new baby in the family again I might want some other letters. The baby's name is Ashley Ann and all I have is the E.
