View Full Version : Stretching an image

I have captured a frame from a compressed 16:9 video which I wish to stretch back to a whole frame with an undistorted image. I tried Image>Transform> Distort where I can pull the handles and stretch the image, but the image boundaries don't move so the left and right sides of the picture are lost. Can anyone suggest how to stretch the image and the bounding frame at the same time so I still see the whole image? Thanks.

If I am understanding your question correctly...you want to re-size the frame and the people in it without distorting them.
If that is so, what I've done to make that work better, is,
to first adjust the frame and move it to its own layer. Then select the people or image you wish to use from the original un-distorted and add them in into the frame on yet a different layer. Then size them as best you can.
Might be necessary to add other items in the frame area.
hope that helps.
I'm sure others will be by that know a lot more than me.

Hi ...

Ah ... I think I may know what you mean :)

Try this:

Image>Resize>Canvas size ...

Check Relative and then add some extra into the width (say about 15 to 20% of the current width) ... that will give you extra space at each side ..

Then when you do Image>Transform>Distort ... all of it will be visible ..

Once you have the image looking OK then just trim off the excess canvas using the crop tool.

Hope thats what you need :)

Thank you both for the prompt help! Wendy's solution was the easiest to apply and it worked perfectly! I attach two small jpegs of the 'before' and 'after' frames

Another way (isn't there always another way in Elements :) ). Use free transform to change the width (if you know it was a 16:9 compressed you can calculate the % to put in the Width box or put the mouse over the W and stretch until it looks right. Then Commit the transform then Image>Resize>Reveal All and the canvas will resize to the stretched image.

Wendy, it's the 12th century Almourol Castle in Portugal. The image is a frame capture from a video shot for 16:9 projection and entered in the annual Australian Widescreen Association Festival competition. I wanted to use a still from it for our newsletter, hence the need to stretch the image back to the correct proportions.

Thanks also to TonyW for his solution too. So much expertise in this forum!
