Was playing around last night, with turning a new picture into one that looks old and a little worse for wear. Any suggestions to improve? Or should I leave well enough alone. Thanks for any comments provided.

That is really neat!!! I like it, I've never done anything like that before...how did you get the crackling on the photo???

I absolutely love the effect you did on the photo. :D
I would change the background. I think it blends in too much with the picture and you are loosing some of the effect.

Very nice Vallerie. I agree with Kim about the background, but everything else is great, well done.

Valerie......
That is JUST LOVELY! Personally, I quite like the background, but I would be interested to compare it if you do change it.......I know with older photos they were often on quite dark cardboard.

Valerie,
wonderfully effective. As Robyn says a shade or two darker bg may make it pop.

Valerie,
That looks great. How about doing a frame with a deckle edge that was so popular in older photos?

Oh that is really good ... very effective and beautifully done :)
I agree about the background it probably would look better if it wasn't so similar to the photo. I like Bayla's ideas of a deckle edge too but they are difficult to make one that looks realistic.
I guess you could take one off another image  ... or try just a plain white edge :)

...or how about doing a torn edge effect....old photos are frequently a bit ripped aren't they? You never know, in a 100 years time maybe one of your descendants using PSE version 89 wil be posting your picture on here asking for restoration tips:D

Very well done. My first impression before reading everyones post was also to do the deckle border and make it look a little torn and worn.

Thank you everyone for your comments, they are very helpful and appreciated.
Colleen...crackling was done over three-four different layer after removing the hue/saturation .... the end result after render clouds....brush stokes spatter and changing bottom layer to overlay was a duplicate layer ... find edges...invert...apply auto levels and sharpen edges.
Kimi & Bob...yes, I now also think the background needs changing.
Robyn & Kev....dark cardboard sounds good
Bayla, Wendy & Kim....not sure what the Deckle Edge is, could you please advise.
Bayla & Brenda...torn edges also sounds good
Once the trick or treat'rs stop knocking on my door, I'm going to try the darker cardboard and torn edge effects and see how they look. Will hopefully post for second opinion's
Once again...thank's for your comments

Hi Valerie ..
A Deckle Edge is that sort of wavy white border edge that some old photos had :)

Wendy,
Is there a tut somewhere for how to do a deckle edge?
Valerie,
If you look at this post (http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/forum/showpost.php?p=172731&postcount=7) of Ellen's you'll see her picture has a deckle edge.

Wendy & Bayla....thx,, now I know what you were talking about. Especially after looking at Bayla's link. I have lots of photo's of me with that edging. Any...while I was taking to my daughter (bride in picture), she suggested trying something that also looks like it had a bit of fire damage (melting sort of). So I tired, don't know if I have achieved the objective or not. What are your thought? Perhaps I try cardboard / deckle tomorrow. Thx again for you help.

Hi Bayla ...
I have tried several times to make a deckle edge but its really difficult to make it look realistic ... so I cheated by selecting one edge from a photo and I use it to construct the edges :)

Valerie..............I feel that the background is too busy on this one and is therefore competing with the photo for attention. :)

The antiquing pack is made up of 4 overlays and two deckle matts; rectangle and oval. One of the overlays looks like it will give you a cracked look to your pictures. I'm downloading it now, so I haven't had a chance to open it and try it out. Check it out here:

Gloria, thanks from me too. Does anyone know the font on that page? I have been looking and can't find it.
Valerie, I have to agree that the new border is a bit much and distracting form the photo.

I was so excited about finding the deckle download that I didn't even notice the font. I like it too, but have no idea what it is. I think I'll try posting it in it's own thread and perhaps it'll get more people to look at it.

Thanks Gloria for the link to the deckle effect, I will have to download and try, as I'm slowing loosing patience with myself trying to get this picture right. Here's my third and maybe my last try. Wendy just couldn't get the cardboard look right, maybe I'm not doing it right.... any advise?
Oh here goes....again any comments welcome

Oh Valerie, that is beautiful. Hard to say without seeing the deckle matt version and the prior version side by side, but I think I favor the deckle edge. Either way you did a fantastic job.

Kim,
I'll be sure to let you know when and if I find out the name of the font. I posted a message at the other site, so hopefully between the two forums someone will see it and recognize it.

Kim....you must be kidding...for a million dollars I proably couldn't duplicate it exactly, even if I want to. I have a very bad habit of not writing down the steps I did to get to the finish product and kick myself very hard when I want to do the same effect again. But I think this is it.....new blank layer...cut & pasted picture in....filled background with color from picture....ran eraser around edge with chalk brush....soft light I think....ran feathering vane thru it....ran texture comb over top...all I believe with soft light or lightening....really not sure.

Valerie,
Love the one with the deckle edged mat! I felt all along that it needed a lighter coloured border. Gloria thanks for finding that....I'm downloading it as I type!
